Liverpool consider move for Borussia Dortmund winger Donyell Malen

Liverpool are in a three-way Premier League battle with Arsenal and Manchester United to sign Borussia Dortmund attacker Donyell Malen.

Donyell Malen

Donyell Malen, 25, has been among the standout performers in a difficult season for Borussia Dortmund, notching 13 goals and four assists in 33 games across all competitions. However, with Dortmund struggling to qualify for next year’s Champions League, the top hierarchy are planning a squad reset at the end of the season.

The Netherlands international is among the club’s most saleable assets and can leave Signal Iduna Park for a fee in the region of €40m-€50m. Liverpool have reportedly tried to sign Malen several times in the past and there is a possibility they get the deal done this time around. However, they face competition from Premier League rivals Arsenal and Man United for the attacker’s signature.

Is Mohamed Salah off to Saudi Arabia?

Liverpool superstar Mohamed Salah has been linked with a move to the Middle East for some time. Last summer, Saudi Pro League side Al-Ittihad tabled an eye-watering £150m bid to sign the Egyptian forward, but the Reds promptly rejected it.

Salah is one of the three Liverpool players, alongside Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk, whose contract runs until 2025. He has shaped up into one of the world’s best footballers since arriving at Anfield in 2017, playing a pivotal role in the club’s rich success under Jurgen Klopp. But with the Egyptian set to turn 32 in June, it wouldn’t be surprising if Liverpool decide to cash him in the summer should the Saudi clubs come up with an offer.

The Reds revive interest in Donyell Malen

Whoever replaces Jurgen Klopp ahead of the 2024/25 season must sort out the future of Salah. Despite the Egyptian enjoying another fruitful campaign in Merseyside, the forward’s powers will be on the wane in the next couple of years. So, Liverpool’s next manager will face a big problem replacing Salah, who could be lured by the riches of Saudi Arabia having won everything as a player in England.

Liverpool are perhaps already putting plans in place to replace Salah and have been monitoring the developments of Donyell Malen at Dortmund.  Malen spent two years in the Arsenal academy but failed to break into the senior team, which resulted in the club selling him to PSV Eindhoven in 2017. The Netherlands international has developed into a quality forward in recent years, and has proven himself in the Eredivisie and Bundesliga, he would be tempted to move to the Premier League.

Supposedly, the 25-year-old might potentially replace Salah on the right flank at Liverpool, although he can operate on the left as well as through the middle. Plus, Malen linking up with the SEG agency in January is perhaps a hint toward a future move, which the Reds would prefer not to lose out on.
