Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount has agreed personal terms with Manchester United ahead of a possible move to Old Trafford in the upcoming summer transfer window.
A youth product of Chelsea’s academy, Mason Mount, 24, has just one year left on his contract and talks over a new deal to stay at the West London club have stalled for some time. The Blues would rather cash in now than lose the creative midfielder for free in 2024 if no agreement over new terms cannot be reached.
Speculation over the England international’s future at Stamford Bridge has been rife in recent months, with many Premier League bigwigs rumoured to be interested. Mount is wanted by Liverpool and Arsenal but Manchester United are now reportedly favourites to win the race for his signature, with Erik ten Hag confident of signing the Chelsea midfielder.
Talks between Mount and Man United have progressed positively since the Ten Hag-managed side’s 4-1 win over Chelsea last week. It is understood that Chelsea are holding out for £ 80 million but the Red Devils are confident in landing the Englishman for less given the short time left on his current deal.
Mason Mount wants to join Man United
Liverpool appeared to be in pole position to sign Mason Mount but they are yet to pursue a deal and recently shifted their focus elsewhere as they try to wrap up a transfer for Brighton’s World Cup winner Alexis Mac Allister. This has allowed Manchester United to swoop in and agree personal terms with Mount, who has struggled to find an agreement on a new lucrative deal with Chelsea and wants to leave.
Mount would bolster Ten Hag’s midfield unit at Old Trafford. Regardless of enduring the worst campaign of his career so far, the England international won back-to-back Player of the Year awards for Chelsea in the campaigns before. The 24-year-old, who broke into the senior Chelsea side under Frank Lampard in 2019, started in both of the club’s Champions League final victory and in the final of the Club World Cup, which the Pensioners both won in 2021.
Casemiro and Christian Eriksen currently occupy the midfield pivot in Ten Hag’s strongest United XI, with Bruno Fernandes acting as the creative link from the No.10 position. Of those three, it seems most likely that Mount would be challenging Eriksen for his spot on the side, as Ten Hag looks to evolve from the 4-2-3-1 system to a 4-3-3 next term.
The Dutch tactician is also on the hunt for several other signings this summer to bridge the gap between his team and the top of the Premier League. As things stand, United and Chelsea remain far apart in their valuation for Mount. It remains to be seen whether a deal goes but it appears that Mount has set his heart on a move to Ten Hag’s United.
