Brentford agree £40m fee for Leeds United midfielder Archie Gray

Brentford are on the verge of signing Leeds United’s teenage prodigy Archie Gray after agreeing a fee that could reach £40m with add-ons. After Brentford met Leeds United’s asking price, the midfielder has been permitted to undergo a medical at the West London club.

The Whites are considering losing one of their brightest prospects, with Archie Gray, 18, reportedly having agreed personal terms with the Bees. Leeds United have been forced to sell the talented 18-year-old in order to be on the right side of the Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

Gray has enjoyed a breakout campaign at Elland Road, racking up 52 appearances across all competitions as Daniel Farke’s side narrowly missed out on promotion, losing the Championship play-off final to Southampton. The England under-21 international, eligible to represent Scotland, joined the Leeds academy at the age of eight and worked hard to rise through the youth ranks.

The teenager won the 2023/24 Championship Player of the Season award, and following his rapid rise, Brentford have acted quickly and beaten competition from several rivals, including Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea, for Gray’s signature.

Archie Gray’s acquisition would be a coup of sorts for Brentford

Last season was Brentford’s lowest finish and points tally of their three Premier League campaigns, winning just five games of their final 25. For the first half of the season, they struggled without the services of Ivan Toney up top. With Toney entering the final year of his contract and likely to be cashed in, Thomas Frank and the Bees management have quickly acquired the services of Brazilian striker Igor Thiago, whose signing was confirmed in February.

As Thomas Frank is set to start pre-squad preparations at the club next week, Brentford are trying to get a deal for Archie Gray over the line. Gray is one of the best young talents in England and the idea of regular first-team football from the onset at Brentford would have appealed to him. He was deployed at right-back by Daniel Farke last season but it is understood the teenager will eventually establish himself as a central midfielder.

All in all, the West Londoners have truly struck gold by securing a deal for Gray.
