Enzo Fernandez Transfer: Man City Agree £125m British Record Deal With Chelsea

Manchester City have struck a deal to sign Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea for a joint-British record fee of £125 million, bringing an end to a transfer saga that had rumbled on for the best part of a year.

The agreement was finalized on deadline day, but the groundwork stretches back much further — Fernandez first informed Chelsea of his desire to leave more than three months ago, and the move only came together after City’s valuation caught up with a summer market reshaped by a string of nine-figure deals across Europe.

How Much Did Manchester City Pay for Enzo Fernandez?

City’s £125 million fee matches the British transfer record set by Liverpool when they signed Alexander Isak from Newcastle a year earlier. For Chelsea, it also represents a tidy profit: the Argentine midfielder arrived from Benfica in February 2023 for a then-record £107 million, meaning the Blues recoup roughly £18 million on a player who never fully won over a section of the Stamford Bridge crowd.

Chelsea had quietly set an asking price in the region of £120 million and communicated it to interested parties back in late May. That deadline came and went without action — until City moved decisively in the closing 48 hours of the window, ultimately landing the deal for £5 million above Chelsea’s original ask.

Why the Deal Took So Long to Get Done

Chelsea had imposed their own internal deadline of August 13 for offers, but sources close to the negotiations say the club were never fully closed to a later deal — provided any bid reflected where the market had moved. With several clubs in England and across Europe paying well over £100 million for individual players this summer, City’s eventual offer was judged to meet that bar.

Formal contact between the two clubs was made on Monday evening, and talks accelerated rapidly from there, with terms wrapped up inside 24 hours.

The Maresca Reunion Driving the Move

At the heart of the transfer is Fernandez’s relationship with Enzo Maresca, who managed him during his time in charge at Stamford Bridge. The pair built a strong working relationship, and Fernandez is understood to have been eager to link up with the Italian again at the Etihad. Personal terms were never expected to be a stumbling block — the fee was always the only real obstacle.

Fernandez’s standing at Chelsea had cooled significantly under new head coach Xabi Alonso, who left the midfielder out of the club’s last two matchday squads, saying he wanted players who showed a “desire to play” for Chelsea. Fernandez was also jeered by sections of the home support during Chelsea’s final preseason friendly and their Premier League opener against Fulham.

What Happens Next: Medical and Onward Transfer Business

Fernandez has been granted permission to speak with City and is set to undergo a medical before signing a long-term contract at the Etihad. Once completed, it will close a chapter that began when he arrived in England as a 22-year-old World Cup winner in 2023.

Chelsea, for their part, are already working on a replacement in central midfield, with Roma’s Manu Kone and Monaco’s Lamine Camara among the names being explored before the window shuts.

Manchester City’s Deadline Day Doesn’t Stop There

Fernandez may not be City’s only arrival on Tuesday. The club are also closing in on a £65 million deal for Everton winger Iliman Ndiaye, agreed after City’s earlier attempts to sign Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo fell through.

  • Fee: £60 million up front, plus £5 million in potential add-ons
  • Competition: Tottenham had also shown interest, but City’s package proved more attractive
  • Background: Ndiaye joined Everton from Marseille for £15 million two years ago and scored six goals last season
  • Status: Underwent his medical at City on Tuesday

Together, Fernandez and Ndiaye would take City’s summer recruitment to five outfield signings, following the earlier arrivals of Elliot Anderson, Ayyoub Bouaddi, and Allan Elias.

Jack Grealish Set for Second Loan Spell at Everton

In a separate piece of business involving the same two clubs, City have agreed to loan Jack Grealish to Everton for a second consecutive season. The England international was at Everton’s Merseyside training base on Tuesday to complete the formalities.
