Unai Emery opens dialogue with Marco Asensio as Aston Villa plan to launch audacious swoop for Real Madrid star

Aston Villa are eyeing a sensational summer swoop for Real Madrid midfielder Marco Asensio.

Marco Asensio

Marco Asensio’s contract with Real Madrid is set to expire at the end of June and the creative midfielder is set to announce his departure from the club this week, ahead of his final game for Los Blancos on Sunday at Santiago Bernabeu against Athletic Bilbao. Starting just 15 of his total 30 league appearances this season, the Spanish international, 27, has contributed an impressive nine goals and six assists.

Aston Villa boss Unai Emery has reportedly opened talks with Asensio over a potential move to Villa Park. They are offering the Spaniard an interesting project with room to progress. However, Emery’s Villa aren’t the only club interested in the Real Madrid star. Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain want to sign him on a free transfer, while AC Milan are keeping tabs on his developments too.

Marco Asensio would be a statement signing for Aston Villa

Marco Asensio has decided to leave Real Madrid due to a lack of starts under Carlo Ancelotti this season, and ahead of European Championship 2024, he wants to be featured a lot more regularly to cement his spot in the Spain squad.

Unai Emery wants to make Asensio one of the best players in the Premier League, having told him that he fully trusts his talents and believes that he can unlock his true potential at Aston Villa. The Spanish tactician has improved a lot of Villa players since arriving at the club, chiefly Ollie Watkins, Emi Buendia, John McGinn and Jacob Ramsey, and there should be no hesitation as to why he cannot make Asensio a key player in the English top flight.

Despite not being a regular starter for Madrid this campaign, Asensio is the third-highest goal-scorer for his side with 12 strikes. He has eight assists on top of those, highlighting the Spanish midfielder’s creativity and flair. He has won everything as a player with Los Blancos and would walk straight into Villa’s starting XI.

In the system Emery has deployed at Villa, Asensio would thrive playing off Watkins. He can also operate as one of the two advanced midfielders, but playing in the hole behind the striker would give him the license to roam around and come up with big moments.

For a player of such quality, experience and winning mentality, Villa signing Asensio on a free transfer from Madrid would be such a statement signing ahead of their maiden Europa Conference League campaign.
