Defender Ezri Konsa has been linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool after impressing for Aston Villa.
A product of the Charlton Athletic youth academy, Ezri Konsa, 23, rose through the ranks and went on to make over 80 first-team appearances for them before signing for Brentford in 2018. A solid campaign with Brentford led to a summer switch to Aston Villa in 2019, and he’s been a pivotal figure at the back for Dean Smith’s side since then.
The English defender has played 52 times for Aston Villa so far, scoring four goals in the process. Konsa has shone for the Villans this season, forming a strong partnership alongside Tyrone Mings at the back and helping Dean Smith’s side to the second-best defensive record in the division.
The 23-year-old centre-back is now pushing for a spot in Gareth Southgate’s England squad, with Tottenham and Liverpool plotting a summer move for him.
Tottenham’s defensive frailties this season
Tottenham have faltered in recent months that currently sees them struggling for a place in next season’s Champions League. They lie ninth in the table having lost four out of their last five games and remain a staggering 17 points behind league leaders Manchester City. With games coming thick and fast, Jose Mourinho needs to find a way to turnaround the Lilywhites’ fortunes.
Spurs are struggling to keep things tight at the back, with Manchester City hammering Mourinho’s side 3-0. Prior to the Manchester City drubbing, Everton slotted five past them to advance into the FA Cup quarter-finals.
Davinson Sanchez and Eric Dier haven’t been consistent at all this season, while Toby Alderweireld isn’t getting any younger with the Belgian centre-half struggling to keep up with the pace of Premier League football. Summer signing Joe Rodon has hardly got a chance to prove his worth at the club so far.
The recurrent problems at the back have seen Tottenham concede 25 goals in 23 games and Mourinho investing in a new centre-back before the start of 2021/22 campaign would be a sensible idea.
Ezri Konsa could be a top signing for Spurs
To put things straight, Tottenham must beat Liverpool to the signing of Ezri Konsa in the summer.
Konsa’s performances weren’t exactly great in the Premier League last season as he was part of the Aston Villa backline that leaked 67 goals. However, the 23-year-old has improved leaps and bounds this term as his stock has skyrocketed over the last several months. He has outshone his partner Tyrone Mings in Villa’s rearguard, which has shipped just 24 goals in 22 games.
Quick and a good reader of the game, Konsa could be the perfect player to complement Eric Dier in Tottenham’s defence. Add in his ball-playing abilities and threat from set-pieces, the former Brentford man has exactly the profile of a player Tottenham needs.
With his best years still ahead of him at 23, Konsa could turn out to be a brilliant long-term asset for Mourinho’s Tottenham. So, splashing the cash on the Aston Villa star would be a smart piece of business.
