Tottenham Hotspur have been offered the opportunity to sign Barcelona defender Eric Garcia in this January transfer window.
Spurs’ recruitment team have been tasked to find a new central defender after spending majority of the season without Cristian Romero and Micky Van de Ven. They are trying to keep the transfer activity private but are holding talks over fortifying Ange Postecoglou’s squad.
With the North Londoners slipping to 15th in the table after the embarrassing 3-2 defeat to Everton on Sunday, Ange Postecoglou is feeling the heat. Despite the speculation surrounding his future, the Hotspur Way chiefs are looking to back him with new signings. And they have reportedly been made aware of Eric Garcia’s availability, although Spurs are not the only club interested in his services.
West Ham, Brighton, Aston Villa, Newcastle United and Wolves have all been given the chance to sign the Spaniard, who doesn’t feature in Hansi Flick’s plans at Barcelona. Garcia came off the bench to score a mighty equaliser against Benfica in the Champions League, which the Spanish side won 5-4 on Tuesday evening. The 24-year-old has made 15 appearances across all competitions this season thus far.
Eric Garcia offered to Spurs
Spurs’ defensive unit has been decimated by injuries, with every defender apart from Pedro Porro spending time on the sidelines this campaign. Postecoglou has been suffering with a lack of depth at centre-back, and that has been documented by young midfielder Archie Gray operating as a makeshift defender.
Thus, the requirement for a centre-back is paramount and Tottenham have now been offered the chance to sign Eric Garcia by Barcelona. The La Liga giants have resolved their financial issues that hurt them for much of January but are ready to move on some of their fringe players to give themselves some wriggle room for new signings.
Garcia is one of those they are looking to sacrifice, and despite failing to live up to the lofty expectations at Barcelona, there has been no shortage of suitors for the versatile defender. The 19-cap Spanish international played 19 times for Manchester City before returning to his boyhood club in 2021, where he has failed to nail down a regular spot in the first XI.
Yet, at 24, Garcia is not the finished product and there is certainly more to come from him. Tottenham could benefit from the ex-Man City man’s best years by signing him, as he’d enhance the squad at Big Ange’s disposal. Garcia will also potentially compete with Romero, Van de Ven and Dragusin for a spot in the first XI.
All in all, Tottenham would be wise to take this opportunity to sign Garcia from Barcelona.
