Arsenal have joined Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool in the race to sign Feyenoord’s highly-rated defender Lutsharel Geertruida this summer.
Lutsharel Geertruida, 23, was close to a move to RB Leipzig last summer but a deal collapsed at the last minute. Following a strong season in the Eredivisie, the 23-year-old defender has been linked with a move away from Feyenoord. Many high-profile clubs around Europe are keen on securing his signature.
The versatile Dutchman’s contract at the Feyenoord Stadium expires in the summer of 2025. Feyenoord plan to sell him in the upcoming summer transfer window to avoid losing him on a free transfer. Thus, it makes sense for the Eredivisie club to sell their star defender on a paltry fee.
Geertruida’s current situation at his club has reportedly attracted the attention of Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham. The Premier League trio are in the market for defensive reinforcements and want the Feyenoord man to join their forces before the 2024/25 campaign commences.
Lutsharel Geertruida expected to leave Feyenoord amid heavy Premier League interest
For Liverpool, Geertruida’s versatility is a boon, and he is an ideal candidate to bolster their backline as they prepare for both Premier League and Champions League campaigns under the new manager, Arne Slot.
Slot’s arrival from Feyenoord gives the Reds a clear edge in the race for the Netherlands international, and it will be interesting to see if the new Liverpool tactician can help facilitate a move for his former player.
Arsenal are also in need of defensive reinforcements, with Mikel Arteta’s side lacking quality cover beyond the first-choice central defensive pairing of William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes. Like Liverpool, they also need a deeper squad to compete in the Premier League and Champions League.
Geertruida, in that regard, would be a smart acquisition for the Gunners as he’d be a quality customer to cover and compete with Saliba and Gabriel while offering essential cover at full-back.
Meanwhile, Tottenham certainly require more depth in the full-back area as Emerson Royal is linked with a move to AC Milan. The Brazilian will need to be replaced adequately if he is sold, and Spurs signing someone in the ilk of Geertruida would make sense.
The 23-year-old scored eight goals and supplied five assists in 34 league appearances for Feyenoord last season. Such numbers are remarkable from a defender’s point of view. Ange Postecoglou’s side could hugely benefit from Geertruida’s presence in both boxes, but they will need to act quickly to beat Arsenal and Liverpool to the Feyenoord star’s signature.
