Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with a move for FC Torino defender Alessandro Buongiorno ahead of the summer transfer window.

Alessandro Buongiorno, 24, emerged as a shining talent in Serie A last season, attracting a lot of attention over the last 12 months with his strong performances for Torino. The centre-back already has a long list of suitors, with Atalanta, Bayern Munich, Napoli and AC Milan keeping tabs on his progress.

The Italian, who was close to joining Atalanta last summer, has also caught the eye of Premier League clubs. Tottenham have reportedly opened talks with Buongiorno’s representatives to gauge the overall cost of the operation. It is understood that the defender will cost around €35 million this summer, but Spurs could face competition from Newcastle United for his signature.

Tottenham planning to fortify their defence

Tottenham have raided the Italian market in the last two years for new players, signing players like Rodrigo Bentancur, Dejan Kulusevski, Cristian Romero, Destiny Udogie, Guglielmo Vicario and Radu Dragusin. They are planning to return to Italy in the summer, as Ange Postecoglou hopes to build on his first season in north London.

Spurs brought in Micky van de Ven from Wolfsburg last summer to reinforce their defence that conceded a truckload of goals during the underwhelming 2022/23 campaign. After allowing Eric Dier to join Bayern Munich in the January transfer window, they added Genoa’s Radu Dragusin to the squad. Regardless of spending the cash on two centre-backs, Ange Postecoglou has recently admitted that his team could do well with another body at the back.

Alessandro Buongiorno could be a shrewd signing

Alessandro Buongiorno has played a massive role in making Torino’s defence one of the best in Serie A this season, with Ivan Juric’s men conceding only 29 goals in 33 games. His rock-solid displays have been admired by Tottenham, who might require a new centre-back by the start of the 2024/25 campaign.

Capable of operating both as a centre-back and left-back, Buongiorno would add much-needed cover and depth to Spurs’ defensive ranks. The Italian is a robust tackler, comfortable on the ball and strong in the air, potentially making him a good fit at Spurs under Ange Postecoglou. The 24-year-old’s versatility of operating in multiple defensive roles will be an added advantage.

At around €35 million, Buongiorno could be a shrewd signing for the Lilywhites. He has the mix of physicality and technical qualities to thrive in the Premier League, and a move to Spurs would be a step up in the versatile defender’s growing career. All in all, Spurs must do their best to sign the Torino star.
