Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing OGC Nice defender Jean-Clair Todibo, as manager Ange Postecoglou looks to bolster his defensive ranks in the January transfer window.
Spurs have enjoyed a promising start to the season under new manager Ange Postecoglou and lie fifth in the table. However, they have been hit by injuries and suspensions to key players in the last two months, which has threatened to derail their campaign. So, Ange Postecoglou wants to address some of his squad’s gaping holes in the winter transfer window, and adding a centre-back appears to be at the top of his agenda.
OGC Nice star Jean-Clair Todibo has emerged as a target for Tottenham. The Frenchman, 23, has been strongly linked with a move to the Premier League in recent months following his eye-catching performances for OGC Nice. Spurs are believed to be the latest English top-flight club to join the likes of Manchester United, Newcastle United and Liverpool in the race to sign the 23-year-old defender.
In the last few days, the Lilywhites have reportedly opened talks with Todibo’s agents to learn whether the defender would be interested in a move to north London in the New Year. The 23-year-old is keen to team up with Ange Postecoglou’s forces, seemingly putting Spurs in the driver’s seat ahead of Man United, Newcastle and Liverpool for his signature.
Spurs to bid for Jean-Clair Todibo?
Tottenham’s lack of defensive depth has been exposed since the long-term injury to summer recruit Micky van de Ven. It has left Postecoglou with just Cristian Romero and Eric Dier as the only senior fit centre-backs in the squad.
While Romero has persistently walked a tightrope with suspension, Dier is entering the final six months of his contract at the club and could be cashed in next month. Ben Davies has done a decent job deputising for the injured Van de Ven but that is not his natural position. Hence, signing a quality defender to compete with Romero and Van de Ven would make complete sense for Spurs.
Jean-Clair Todibo has been linked with a move to Spurs in the last few days. The French defender has put his Barcelona nightmare behind him and developed into a key defender for Nice in recent years, racking up 117 appearances across all formats. He has been a standout performer in a Nice side that sits second in the Ligue 1 table after 17 games, five points behind league leaders Paris Saint-Germain.
It remains to be seen whether Nice are ready to entertain any bids for Todibo—one of their best players—in the winter window, especially at a time when they are challenging PSG for the Ligue 1 title. Nonetheless, Todibo, who is a firm favourite at the Allianz Riviera, is valued at around £35million.
Given the firm interest in one of Ligue 1’s best talents, Spurs must push towards meeting Nice’s valuation if Postecoglou is keen on adding Todibo to his defensive ranks.
