Tottenham Hotspur keen on signing Palmeiras starlet Marcus Vinnicius

Tottenham Hotspur are considering a move for Palmeiras full-back Marcus Vinnicius in this summer transfer window.

Marcus Vinnicius

Marcus Vinnicius, 17, has massively impressed in the Palmeiras youth side, establishing himself a mainstay in the Under-17 side since arriving at the club in 2022. Owing to the full-back’s development in the academy, he set to sign his first professional contract with Palmeiras this summer until June 2026. He is expected to have an £85m release clause in his deal, but the Brazilian club are open to negotiating an agreement with any concerned club from Europe.

The teenager’s performances haven’t gone unnoticed across Europe, with Tottenham Hotspur reportedly monitoring his situation. In addition to Spurs, Newcastle United and Wolverhampton Wanderers are interested from England, while the Portuguese side Benfica also remain keen for his signature.

Spurs looking to win race for Marcus Vinnicius’ signature

Ange Postecoglou is aiming to build on a fine debut season at Spurs. He must be looking to reshape his squad after his side fell badly at the back end of last season and only managed to qualify for the Europa League.

The north Londoners are actively scouring the transfer market to bring in quality reinforcements that can not only make an immediate but also add value in the long run. With centre-backs Micky van de Ven, Radu Dragusin and Cristian Romero participating at the Euro 2024 and Copa America respectively, Ange Postecoglou will need to depend on the academy kids to marshal his team’s backline over the opening few games of the upcoming pre-season tour.

Perhaps, that is why Spurs are looking to bring more cover to their defensive unit by signing a young talent with potential. Palmeiras youngster Marcus Vinnicius has emerged as a target for the Lilywhites and for all the right reasons. He is an exciting defensive talent who has grown leaps and bounds in the Palmeiras academy, impressing with his strength in the air, tackling skills and composure in possession.

The 17-year-old will add youthful exuberance, agility and pace to the Spurs side. Vinnicius would be a good option to rest and rotate with Destiny Udogie at left-back. His potential arrival may see Ben Davies become surplus to requirements at Spurs. With Davies’ contract expiring in 2025, they may decide to cash him in this summer.

Given that Vinnicius is close to signing his first professional contract at Palmeiras and several clubs are vying for his signature, Tottenham face an uphill task to persuade the Brazilian full-back to the Hotspur Lane this summer.
