Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay has told his friends he is seeking to leave the club in the summer amidst interest from Newcastle United.
The Scotland international, 26, has dropped down the midfield pecking order under Erik ten Hag following the arrivals of Casemiro and Christian Eriksen last summer. The central midfielder has made 37 appearances across all competitions for Manchester United but has started just four Premier League games since September.
Scott McTominay expects the club to recruit another midfielder in the upcoming transfer window, which will further increase competition for places in Ten Hag’s squad. As a result, he is looking to leave his boyhood club in pursuit of regular football. Newcastle United and West Ham are reportedly keeping tabs on the situation of the 26-year-old, who is currently under contract at Old Trafford until the summer of 2025 plus a club option to extend by a further year.
No marquee summer additions for Newcastle?
Eddie Howe has distanced Newcastle United from making ‘marquee signings’ this summer, regardless of the clear need to strengthen the squad ahead of the return to European football. He is expected to keep almost the same squad next season, with just three to four fresh faces set to arrive at St. James’ Park.
Howe has worked wonders at Newcastle, and with a few quality additions, he will want to continue his rebuild.
Scott McTominay could be a useful player for Newcastle
Newcastle have been alerted by the possibility of Scott McTominay departing Man United in the summer for regular playing opportunities.
McTominay has struggled to establish himself as a starter under Ten Hag, with only ten starts to his name. With Ten Hag targeting a couple of midfielders, there is every chance the Scotsman could fall even further down the pecking order. At 26, the midfielder is well aware that he needs to be getting more starting opportunities than he’s had this season.
Having risen through Man United’s youth ranks, McTominay has played 207 games for the senior team, scoring 19 goals. He is a strong, athletic and tenacious customer who can do a good job in the middle of the park—so if Scotland international does leave the Red Devils for Newcastle, it could be a smart move for him to get regular playing time and show his footballing talents.
In return, Newcastle would get a Premier League-proven midfielder who can provide cover and competition for Bruno Guimaraes. All in all, the Toon Army must go all out for McTominay to enhance their squad depth ahead of the Champions League nights next term.
