Manchester United keen on appointing Carlo Ancelotti to replace Erik ten Hag

Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti is the subject of interest from Manchester United, with new minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe scouring the market for a new manager heading into the summer amid uncertainties surrounding Erik ten Hag’s future.

Regardless of Erik ten Hag not appearing to be under any immediate threat, speculation is now widespread about who could succeed the Dutch tactician once the season ends. Gareth Southgate has been hotly linked with the Manchester United job in recent days, considering this summer’s European Championships will possibly mark the end of his eight-year stint as the England manager. He has never lifted a trophy in his managerial career thus far, something the Englishman would want to quickly change by winning the Euros 2024 in Germany.

Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti is the latest name to be linked with the Man United job. The Red Devils would reportedly love to hire Carlo Ancelotti as their next head coach, with Sir Dave Brailsford—Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s right-hand man—a huge fan of the experienced Italian.

Erik ten Hag’s future at Old Trafford in doubt

Doubts over Erik ten Hag’s future at Man United have mounted due to a poor 2023/24 campaign thus far, with his team lying sixth in the Premier League table and nine points off the top four. While the 54-year-old’s pressure lessened following the FA Cup quarter-final victory over Liverpool at Old Trafford before the March international break, his job remains in danger.

A whole list of names of high-profile, experienced as well as up-and-coming young names have been touted as potential successors to Ten Hag, with Champions League qualification for next season still far from guaranteed at this stage. Thus, it should come as no surprise that Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his team have registered interest in bringing Carlo Ancelotti back to the Premier League.

Carlo Ancelotti ranked among Europe’s best managers

Carlo Ancelotti, 64, has been among the world’s best managers for almost 30 years, having enjoyed hugely successful stints with stellar clubs such as AC Milan, Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid. He is currently enjoying his second spell with Real Madrid since 2021 after his time at Everton abruptly ended.

The Italian manager has had a fantastic second stint at Santiago Bernabeu, masterminding Los Blancos to a La Liga and Champions League double in his first season back at the club. Under the leadership of Ancelotti, the Spanish heavyweights have won three trophies and remain hungry for more this term.

However, unfortunately, a move for the 64-year-old is deemed unrealistic as he is currently under contract at Real until 2026, having penned a new deal in December. And with a move for Ancelotti unlikely, it will be interesting to see who Ratcliffe and INEOS turn toward to replace Ten Hag if he is sacked.
