Liverpool are set to battle it out with Manchester United and Newcastle United for the signing of OGC Nice midfielder Khephren Thuram.
Khephren Thuram, 22, joined OGC Nice in 2019 after coming through the ranks at AS Monaco. The Frenchman has enjoyed a fantastic Ligue 1 season with OGC Nice, registering two goals and assists in 28 appearances from the midfield. He was called up to the France national team for the UEFA Euro 2024 Qualifiers and recently made his international debut against the Netherlands.
The central midfielder’s performances in Ligue 1 have attracted interest from Premier League clubs. Liverpool, Man United and Newcastle United have reportedly shown an interest in signing Thuram, who will be available for around €50 million in the summer.
Liverpool set for a huge midfield rebuild
Liverpool desperately need a midfield rebuild after a poor Premier League season that sees them sit sixth on the table, seven points behind fourth-place Tottenham.
The likes of Fabinho, Thiago Alcantara and Jordan Henderson have regressed significantly, and the latter two have been quite injury prone as well in recent times. James Milner, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are expected to leave the club when their contracts expire in June, so that will create room for Jurgen Klopp to fill in his squad with some quality central midfielders.
Someone like Khephren Thuram could prove to be a quality long-term acquisition for Liverpool. Thuram has developed into a key player for Nice in recent seasons, and he is considered one of the brightest young midfield talents in France right now. The 22-year-old has shone in Ligue 1 this campaign, catching the eye with his all-action displays in Nice’s engine room.
The Frenchman has the qualities to make an instant impact for Klopp’s Reds. Klopp wants midfielders who will suit his high-pressing, intense and aggressive style of play. He is seemingly looking to have a cover for Fabinho too. And, the German tactician would love to have Thuram in his squad as he can eventually take over the defensive midfield role from Fabinho.
On the other hand, a move to Liverpool would be a major step up in Thuram’s career, and a world-class coach like Klopp could help him grow and unlock his true potential. The Frenchman could prove to be a top long-term signing for the Reds, however, it remains to be seen whether they are prepared to fight hard against Man United and Newcastle for his signature.
