Everton have started working on a deal to sign Burnley winger Maxwel Cornet. The two clubs are understood to be in contact and talks are progressing well.
Maxwel Cornet, 25, scored nine goals and registered an assist in 26 games in what was his debut Premier League campaign with Burnley, but couldn’t stop the club from getting relegated. The Clarets are in the process of being rebuilt following their relegation to the Championship and the appointment of Vincent Kompany as head coach.
The Ivory Coast international is said to be the subject of interest from elsewhere, but Everton is currently his most likely destination as Frank Lampard aims to rebuild his squad after a disastrous 2021/22 campaign. Cornet could become the Toffees’ second signing of the summer after they snapped up his former Burnley teammate James Tarkowski on a Bosman.
Everton must replace Richarlison
Everton are working hard to land reinforcements before the new campaign gets underway. They are in the market for new players that can improve their ranks after a forgettable last season that saw Frank Lampard’s side achieve top-flight in the penultimate game.
Richarlison’s departure to Tottenham this summer has weakened the attacking options at Goodison Park, something which Lampard must address. The likes of Anthony Gordon, Alex Iwobi and Demarai Gray are not prolific forwards, while Dominic Calvert-Lewin will be hoping to have an injury-free term.
So, Lampard must prioritise bringing in a player who can replace Richarlison’s goals, assists and overall influence in attack.
Can Maxwel Cornet be that player for Everton?
Maxwel Cornet hit the ground running at Burnley in his first season in the Premier League, demonstrating that he is more than capable of playing at the highest level. He was Burnley’s best player, scoring goals, creating chances and combining well with his fellow attacking players.
The Ivorian can play in various positions across the pitch, and such flexibility could add a lot of value to Frank Lampard’s side. One can expect him to enhance the quality of the Toffees’ first XI by adding more goals, assists and pace to the attack. The speedy winger can create some meaningful opportunities in the final third for his teammates with his crossing ability and remains a decent finisher in front of goal.
At 25, Cornet is approaching the best years of his career and can contribute a lot to this Everton side desperate for flair and goals. The ex-Lyon star can add the X-factor to Lampard’s side, whilst adding his top-level experience to the Everton squad.
Hence, the Toffees are doing the right thing by trying to sign Cornet from Burnley.
