Aston Villa receive boost in Giovani Lo Celso pursuit after Napoli drop interest

Aston Villa have received a boost in their hopes of signing Tottenham midfielder Giovani Lo Celso.

Giovani Lo Celso

Along with Aston Villa, Napoli have been heavily linked with a move for Giovani Lo Celso. In fact, Napoli have opened talks with Spurs over a potential deal amid uncertainty over the future of Piotr Zielinski, who has entered the final year of his contract in Naples.

However, with Zielinski making a U-turn and now ready to commit his future with Napoli, the Italian champions are likely to drop their interest in Lo Celso. This has reportedly left Aston Villa with the opportunity to have a clear go at the Spurs outcast. Lo Celso is on Aston Villa’s list of midfield targets, with Unai Emery keen on a reunion this summer.

Lo Celso, 27, hasn’t featured for Spurs in competitive football since January 2022. After 18 months on loan at Villarreal, though, the World Cup winner has been back with Spurs for new boss Ange Postecoglou’s first pre-season.

Despite the creative midfielder impressing in the pre-season so far, there is an expectation that Spurs could still try to offload the Argentinean international this summer. The North London club are likely to sanction a deal for Lo Celso, provided an obligation to buy is included in any loan pact.

Unai Emery wants to reunite with Giovani Lo Celso

After qualifying for the Europa Conference League playoffs, Aston Villa have meant business in the transfer market. They have secured the signings of Youri Tielemans, Pau Torres and Moussa Diaby, thus, addressing the most important areas of Unai Emery’s squad.

Playing twice a week next season is certain to take a toll on the Villa players, meaning Emery could do well with a few more additions to his squad. There is interest in Lo Celso from Villa, with Emery keen to reunite with the player for the fourth separate occasion.

Operating as an advanced eight or in the hole behind the striker, Lo Celso would bring creativity and flair to Villa’s midfield. He can spot a pass in the final third, link play well and score goals from in and around the box. The Argentinean would also add vital depth to the squad to help the Villans balance the domestic competitions with European football.

With Lo Celso sharing a good working relationship with Emery and European football on offer at Villa Park in the upcoming season, unlike Spurs, joining Villa could be a tempting proposition for the 27-year-old.
