Tottenham are on the brink of signing right-back Pedro Porro from Sporting CP, with a contract until 2028 agreed.
Spurs boss Antonio Conte may have strengthened his attacking options with the signing of Arnaut Danjuma on loan from Villarreal, but he still has time to address the other areas of the pitch. He is seemingly on the hunt for a new wing-back following the inconsistent performances of Emerson Royal and Matt Doherty so far this season.
And it looks like Conte has finally found one in Pedro Porro. According to reputed Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Tottenham have reached a £ 42 million verbal agreement with Sporting CP for the signing of Pedro Porro. The Spanish wing-back is on his way to London to undertake a medical before signing for the north London club.
Porro, 23, was on Manchester City’s books, but spent his three years at the club on loan in Spain and at Sporting CP, before joining them permanently last summer. He has been in sensational form this season, chalking up 14 goal contributions already.
Pedro Porro should fit Antonio Conte’s system like a glove
Antonio Conte has often deployed a 3-4-2-1/3-4-3 system at Spurs ever since taking charge of the club back in November 2021. In Ivan Perisic and Ryan Sessegnon, the Spurs boss has decent options at left wing-back but the same cannot be said for the players on the other flank.
Emerson Royal and Matt Doherty have proven that they are not quite up to scratch, with the former, in particular, coming under huge criticism from fans. Doherty continues to blow hot and cold, while Djed Spence has failed to break into the first XI, managing only a handful of appearances since joining Middlesbrough in the summer of 2022.
As a result, Conte has been forced to dip into the transfer market for a new wing-back, and as per the latest reports, he is about to get Pedro Porro. Porro is an attacking full-back who will fit into Conte’s wing-back system like a glove. Going by his goal contributions and qualities, the Spaniard could add more potency in the final third of the pitch for Spurs.
The 23-year-old has scored two goals and provided six assists for Sporting in the Liga NOS so far this season and will hope to make an immediate impact in north London. He is also defensively diligent and should be an immediate upgrade on Conte’s current right wing-back options.
Having not been fancied by Man City, Porro will be determined to prove his worth in the Premier League and help Tottenham secure a top-four spot this season.
