UEFA Champions League Matchday 3 preview: Real Madrid and Inter Milan face off in a crucial contest, a heavyweight clash between Atalanta and Liverpool.
Champions League is back with a host of mouth-watering contests on Matchday 3. Inter square off against Real Madrid as both the sides are in search of their first win. Atalanta vs Liverpool is probably the match of the day while Manchester City and Bayern will continue to extend their winning run.
Group A: Bayern Munich, Atletico Madrid, Salzburg, Lokomotiv Moscow
Salzburg vs Bayern Munich
Salzburg will host the defending champions Bayern Munich as they look for their first win of the season. Salzburg must have noted how Bayern struggled in their away game against Lokomotiv Moscow on Matchday 2 and they will hope are to do the same now. However, Bayern are a champion side and would have prepared for everything.
Lokomotiv Moscow vs Atletico Madrid
Atletico Madrid won their first Champions League game of this season against Salzburg last week, courtesy of Joao Felix’s heroics. The Portuguese was also on target against Osasuna in the weekend where he scored a brace to help Atletico extend their undefeated run in La Liga. Now, they will be up against Lokomotiv Moscow, who are looking for their first win.
Group B: Real Madrid, Inter Milan, Monchengladbach, Shakhtar Donetsk
Shakhtar Donetsk vs Gladbach
Shakhtar Donetsk, who are the leaders of the Group A, will host Gladbach on the Matchday 3. Gladbach were also off to a quite an impressive start after drawing against Real Madrid and Inter Milan. A win for the Germans will see them eclipse Shakhtar to the top position.
Real Madrid vs Inter Milan
Both the heavyweights are without a win in UCL this season, with Real Madrid being the worst side after picking up just one point in two games. However, Los Blancos will take advantage of their good form in La Liga when they face off Inter Milan, who have already drawn twice and lost a game in Serie A. Romelu Lukaku, their top scorer in this season, will miss the game due to injury and it is already a huge setback for Antonio Conte.
Group C: Manchester City, Marseille, Porto, Olympiacos
Manchester City vs Olympiacos
Manchester City have been off to an immaculate start after winning both of their Champions League games. Furthermore, they are coming off a narrow win against Sheffield United in the Premier League. On the other hand, Olympiacos are third in the group after a win and a defeat.
Porto vs Marseille
Andre Villas-Boas’ Marseille were off to a disastrous start after losing both their game in UCL. They are now desperate for a win to stay alive in the competition. Meanwhile, Porto defeated Olympiacos last week to register their first win and would try to do the same when they host the Ligue 1 outfit.
Group D: Liverpool, Atalanta, Ajax, Midtjylland
Atalanta vs Liverpool
Atalanta will host Liverpool in a cracking Champions League encounter and probably the best of the matchday 3. Jurgen Klopp is well aware of his poor record against the Italian opponents and will look to end this time around. With both Fabinho and Virgil van Dijk missing in the defence, Atalanta’s imperious attack would impose a serious threat to the Reds.
Midtjylland vs Ajax
Ajax will be looking for their first win after losing against Liverpool and sharing points against Atalanta. A win is needed for the Eredivisie giants to stay relevant in this group and they will look to make the most of the opportunity against bottom dwellers Midtjylland.
