Transfer window is coming to a close and with it, the frustration at Arsenal grows seeing how the Gunners failed to bring in any notable reinforcements ahead of the 2019/20 season. Their frustrations, however, reached new heights when they got denied a €28 million bid for Celtic’s left-back Kieran Tierney.
Lack of new arrivals at the club is currently the biggest concern of Arsenal, who do not look too good ahead of the upcoming season. With a rather disappointing 2018/19 season, which saw them losing the finals of Europa League on top of finishing at an underwhelming 5th spot in the Premier League, the fans are expecting changes which would return them to former glory or at least get them back in the fight for an EPL title. Those plans, however, don’t seem to work in Arsenal’s favour, whose lack of new signings frustrate their fans who have a hard time believing the 2019/20 season will be any better compared to the last one. But it’s not to say Arsenal are not trying to sign new players and strengthen the team.
One of their main targets of the 2019 summer is the 22-year-old Scottish left-back Kieran Tierney from Celtic. A very promising youngster who has helped his team win 5 Scottish championships, 3 Scottish Cups and 3 Scottish league cups has made a name for himself in Scotland and is now sought after by Arsenal, who hope they can offer him a chance to prove himself in the Premier League as well. As a primary target of Unai Emery, the Gunners sent Celtic an offer of €17 million for the youngster, which as expected was swiftly rejected. Knowing they have to increase their bid, the north London outfit send a €28 million bid which, just like their first offer failed to spark interest in Celtic. It was reported that Celtic were not happy with the structure of the bid, which was made of numerous add-ons to reach the €28 million fee.
Being turned down for the 2nd time, it is expected Unai Emery will return for the 3rd time with an improved offer, in hopes to persuade Celtic and sign the 2nd addition of the summer following the signing of 19-year-old Gabriel Martinelli at the start of July. The young Scottish defender who has played a total of 97 games in Premiership league in his career is expected to be a big addition to Arsenal and a huge boost in their quest to top 4 finish next season. However, as it seems now, the Gunners have found themselves in a position where they will have to open their wallet more or offer Celtic a better deal, which would be appealing enough for them to accept.
Arsenal tried to buy Young Real Madrid talent Mariano Diaz as well, but he rejected to move in London. Meanwhile, Gunners offer £40m to Crystal Palace for Wilfried Zaha, plus Mohamed Elneny, Calum Chambers and Carl Jenkinson, but still waiting for the reply.
But their transfer frustrations do not stop there. In addition to Kieran Tierney, Arsenal were expected to sign the 18-year-old William Saliba, who has reportedly already agreed with the Gunners on a 5-year-deal. Just as the deal was going to be finalised, Tottenham stepped in and offered the young defender a more appealing offer, which resulted in the Arsenal deal not coming through. As it was reported William Saliba did not decide on his next destination yet, meaning there is still hope Arsenal could persuade the defender to join their ranks instead of leaving for Tottenham Hotspur.
