Should Chelsea sign Sergio Aguero on a free transfer?

Chelsea are monitoring striker Sergio Aguero’s situation at Manchester City ahead of a potential move this summer.

Manchester City player Sergio Aguero

Sergio Aguero, 32, has enjoyed a dazzling career in the Premier League with Manchester City since joining from Atletico Madrid back in 2011. He is Manchester City’s top goalscorer with 257 strikes from 384 games. However, the diminutive Argentinean is out of contract at the Etihad in June and City are yet to offer him a new deal.

Barcelona have made contact with Sergio Aguero about a potential free transfer to Nou Camp at the end of the season, while Ligue 1 powerhouse Paris Saint-Germain are also interested in the striker. Chelsea are said to be long-term admirers of City’s goal-machine since he snubbed Stamford Bridge for Etihad Stadium ten years ago.

Is Aguero set to stay in England after Manchester City deal expires?

Aguero’s future at City remains uncertain as he is yet to hold any talks of an extension with the club despite the centre-forward’s current deal expiring this summer. The Argentinean international continues to be linked with the likes of Chelsea, Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain, with the 32-year-old pondering over a decision to stay put in the Premier League even if it means leaving Pep Guardiola’s City.

The striker has endured a tough season where he has made only 14 appearances across all competitions thus far, netting just three goals in the process. Surprisingly, Aguero’s only league goal came last weekend in the 3-0 victory over relegation-threatened Fulham at the Craven Cottage. The 32-year-old’s season has been hampered by injuries and Covid-19, and that has seen him fall out-of-favour under Pep Guardiola.

Should Chelsea sign Aguero on a free transfer?

A summer of big spending saw the likes of Hakim Ziyech, Timo Werner and Kai Havertz join Olivier Giroud, Tammy Abraham, Mason Mount, Christian Pulisic and Callum Hudson-Odoi in Chelsea’s attack. The kind of players Chelsea have going forward is certain to send shivers down any team’s spine, and while Thomas Tuchel has plugged the defensive leaks since replacing Frank Lampard, he is yet to get the Blues scoring goals for fun.

Despite the Pensioners possessing unbelievable firepower in the squad, it would not be a bad idea to sign Sergio Aguero. The Argentinean has already secured his status as one of the best strikers the Premier League has ever seen. The centre-forward may have struggled with injuries over the last few seasons, but at 32, he could still play at the highest level for the next couple of years. He would instantly boost Chelsea’s squad, whilst acting as a replacement for Giroud.

Giroud will turn 35 in September, while Werner hasn’t hit the heights expected in his debut season at Stamford Bridge. Abraham has been hit with injuries this season and a lack of game time has resulted in him being dropped out of the England squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

For a Chelsea team that’ll look to challenge for the Premier League title next season, having a player with Aguero’s winning pedigree and volumes of experience in the squad could make a huge difference. Even if the former Atletico Madrid star hasn’t been as influential this season as he has been throughout his time in the Premier League, he is worth the gamble for the Blues.

Thus, Chelsea must look to snap up the veteran Argentinean on a free transfer ahead of the 2021/22 campaign.
