LOSC Lille’s Jonathan David has been grabbing attention this season, with a string of impressive displays.
In the 25 appearances that he has made for Lille this season in Ligue 1, he has scored 12 goals. The 22-year-old is set to exit Lille at the end of this season if the words of his agent are to be taken as a reference. His agent, Nick Mavromanas revealed a few weeks ago that his client would not be a Lille player next season.
David, in an interview with Telefoot, spoke about his future. He did not give away anything concrete but may have given a clue about his next destination. He mentioned that the Premier League is an attractive option and the best competition in the world when it comes to competition.
“He said what he said. I’m under contract at LOSC. The most important thing for me is to finish the season as well as possible. What happens after that, we’ll see. The Premier League attracts everyone. It’s the most competitive championship in the world. It’s a very good championship.”
Liverpool linked with Jonathan David
With David being tipped to make a move to England, despite rumors of interest from Inter Milan and Paris Saint-Germain, Liverpool have entered the picture. The source understands that West Ham, Newcastle, Liverpool, and Arsenal could be the next potential destination for David.
LOSC Lille are said to be demanding a fee in the range of €60 million for their striker and all three reported clubs could afford that figure. But, it remains to be seen if they would be willing to shell out that big a sum for the 22-year-old.
Do Liverpool need someone like Jonathan David?
Roberto Firmino has become injury-prone off late and has managed to score only four goals in the 15 Premier League outings he has had. He has three assists to his name but injuries have halted his progression this season.
Liverpool did sign Luis Diaz from Porto in January, they could look at David to increase their attacking depth. Firmino’s contract expires in 2023 and he could also be sold next summer.
Jonathan David is certainly a star in the making if he is groomed in the right way. In Jurgen Klopp’s attacking system, the Canadian is likely to flourish. Moreover, with his physicality and pace, he has got the cut-out dimensions to succeed in the Premier League.
Liverpool are also in the market for a midfielder and have been linked with Jude Bellingham, who has been valued at a hefty £101 million by Borussia Dortmund. The English starlet could emerge as a priority target for the Reds, with their midfield lacking depth, in the absence of Gini Wjinaldum. Liverpool are not known to spend big and it is highly likely that they would pass on signing Bellingham because of his massive transfer value.
David would offer some much-needed attacking depth, allowing Klopp to rest his main attackers in Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah, from time to time. In other words, David would be a good fit for Liverpool.
