Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic on Liverpool’s radar

Liverpool are planning to make a move for Lazio star Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, who could be sold in the summer as he approaches the end of his contract.

Sergej Milinkovic Savic of SS Lazio

Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, 28, has been one of Serie A’s top-performing midfielders in recent years, contributing 64 goals and 59 assists in 330 appearances for Lazio. The central midfielder is set to enter the final 12 months of his contract at Lazio – which expires in the summer of 2024. Lazio are ready to offer him a new contract but the 28-year-old is seemingly looking to leave the club due to his desire to compete at high levels and in prestigious competitions.

Liverpool were interested in signing Milinkovic-Savic two years ago, so manager Jurgen Klopp is keen to bring the player to Anfield this summer. The Serbian international could reportedly be available for £44m but the Reds face competition from Juventus, who hold a long-standing interest in the player.

Liverpool set to prioritise revamping the midfield

Jurgen Klopp is set to rebuild Liverpool’s midfield with the upcoming exits of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Naby Keita and James Milner at the end of the season. Thiago Alcantara has been out for some time with an injury, while Arthur Melo is expected to return to Juventus in the summer upon the expiry of his loan. Plus, Fabinho has suffered a massive dip in form this season.

So, it is easy to see why Klopp is seemingly prioritising midfield reinforcements before the start of the 2023/24 campaign.

Sergej Milinkovic-Savic would be a terrific signing for Liverpool

Liverpool have not been even close to their best this season and find themselves a staggering 17 points behind table-toppers Arsenal, although the Gunners have played two extra games. The Reds also suffered a humiliating exit from the Champions League round of 16 last week at the hands of Real Madrid.

Having seen the standards and performance levels drop this season, Klopp wants to add quality players to his squad in the summer as he attempts to make Liverpool title challengers next term. Sergej Milinkovic-Savic is a player on Liverpool’s radar as he is approaching the final 12 months of his contract at Lazio, so the latest reports may be music to Klopp’s ears.

Milinkovic-Savic has registered six goals and eight assists in 36 games across all competitions this campaign so far but his form has taken a dip since the 2022 World Cup. Yet, he remains a class act and would immediately elevate Liverpool’s midfield. The Serbian would be an upgrade on any of Liverpool’s current central midfielders, which speaks volumes about his quality and pedigree.

Lazio would loathe to lose Milinkovic-Savic on a free transfer in 2024, so they could cash him in the summer if they fail to make progress in contract negotiations. As the 28-year-old has been a spectacular performer for Lazio in Serie A, his reported £44m price tag would seem like an absolute bargain if Liverpool manages to secure his signature.
