Fenerbahce goalkeeper Altay Bayindir undergoing medical ahead of potential move to Manchester United

Manchester United are performing medical tests on Fenerbahce goalkeeper Altay Bayindir ahead of a proposed move to Old Trafford.

Altay Bayindir

With Altay Bayindir suffering a recent back injury, the Red Devils want some clarifications on the issue before deciding whether to press ahead and sign him. They have been pursuing the goalkeeper for a while now, with Erik ten Hag in need of a top back-up for No.1 Andre Onana.

The Turkey international, 25, is reportedly undergoing conditional checks in Greece and subject to the results, Manchester United will have the choice to sign him in a deal worth around € 5 million or switch attention to other goalkeeping options. Any move for Bayindir would be dependent on Dean Henderson leaving, with Crystal Palace leading Nottingham Forest in the race for his signature as things stand.

Dean Henderson to leave Man United?

Dean Henderson is returning from an injury of his own and will be only allowed to leave Old Trafford if the club have a replacement in place. The English shot-stopper, 26, spent the 2022/23 season on loan with Nottingham Forest, where he started 18 Premier League games before suffering a hamstring injury.

Nottingham Forest have signed USA international Matt Turner from Arsenal to be their new No.1 but also remain interested in securing Henderson’s signature. However, they face strong competition from Crystal Palace, who are seeking a new goalkeeper to replace Vicente Guaita after the veteran Spaniard has refused to play for the club after losing his No.1 spot to Sam Johnstone.

In the wake of Guaita’s reluctance to play, Palace are interested in signing Henderson on loan from Man United with an obligation to buy next year.

Altay Bayindir could be a solid backup for Andre Onana

Altay Bayindir joined Fenerbahce from Ankaragücü back in the summer of 2019 and has gone on to make 146 appearances in total thus far. The Turkish shot-stopper made 40 appearances in all competitions as Jorge Jesus’ side finished second in the Super Lig and won the Turkish Cup last season.

Standing at 6ft 6ins tall, Bayindir has proven to be a reliable shot-stopper and comfortable with the ball at his feet. Admired for his distribution skills, he would be a bargain signing for United at €5million and complete a three-strong group of senior goalkeepers alongside Andre Onana and Tom Heaton, although the latter is ruled out for a few weeks with a calf injury.

Bayindir is highly regarded in Turkey and would act as United’s new No.2 behind Onana.
