Chelsea are monitoring AS Roma’s Leonardo Spinazzola as the full-back has impressed Italy at the ongoing European Championships.
Leonardo Spinazzola, 28, has already seen his stock upsurge on the back of a solid 2020/21 Serie A campaign with AS Roma. His reputation has only ascended further at the Euro 2020, with the Italian wing-back earning the Man of the Match award against Turkey and Austria respectively.
As a result, Real Madrid have also started following the 28-year-old’s situation. However, Chelsea have already asked Jose Mourinho’s AS Roma about Spinazzola, with the Serie A club ‘attentive to every type of offer’ they could receive for the wing-back this summer.
Thomas Tuchel is eyeing reinforcements in the transfer market after guiding Chelsea to the Champions League trophy in May. He has done an incredible job at Stamford Bridge since replacing Frank Lampard at the back end of January.
With Tuchel at the helm, the Blues have a manager who can be trusted to build a very strong team. That being said, the west Londoners must fully back the German tactician in the transfer window to challenge trophies on multiple fronts and the Premier League next season.
Chelsea have a couple of areas that need addressing this summer
Tuchel has a few areas at Chelsea that need looking at. He and the Chelsea board have certainly headed into the summer transfer window with a few targets in mind, whilst keeping their alternatives lined up too.
A new striker could top the list as the Chelsea strikers struggled to finish off chances last season. Tammy Abraham’s time at the club looks to be over, while Olivier Giroud isn’t quite at the level to lead Chelsea’s attack week in, week out. Last summer’s big-money signing, Timo Werner found it tough to adapt to the demands of Premier League football but he’s expected to improve in his second season at Stamford Bridge.
Signing a commanding centre-back to compete with Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen, Cesar Azpilicueta and Thiago Silva would make sense too, with Kurt Zouma likely to be sold. But just as important as any of those aforementioned positions is bringing in a wing-back this summer.
Is Leonardo Spinazzola the right fit at Stamford Bridge?
Wing-back Achraf Hakimi was one of Thomas Tuchel’s top targets, but he has snubbed Chelsea and recently joined Paris Saint-Germain from Inter Milan.
At Chelsea’s left wing-back position, Tuchel currently has Ben Chilwell, Marcos Alonso and Emerson Palmieri at his disposal. However, with both Alonso and Emerson linked with Chelsea exits this summer, Leonardo Spinazzola would be an ideal replacement.
Spinazzola would be an excellent addition at left wing-back in Tuchel’s 3-4-3 system. His pace and direct running would make him an asset for the Blues. The Italian international’s signing would add experience, quality and depth to Chelsea’s defensive ranks.
The 28-year-old could slot in well in the Chelsea team and would work well in Tuchel’s system, where the wing-backs are expected to be bomb up and down throughout the game. Spinazzola would be an instant upgrade on Alonso, whilst competing with Chilwell for the left wing-back position.
The AS Roma star could be a key player for the Pensioners for the next five years which makes the investment a wise one.
