It seems as though you cannot have one without the other but surely it won’t be too long before Mbappe follows suit and puts pen to paper too right?
All eyes have been on PSG’s two main players this season and whether they would be signing contract extensions or if they would be seeking options elsewhere.
Talk and rumours have been rife each time these players step out onto the pitch about whether they would stay or go. But defeats in the Champions League yet again this season and being at risk of losing their Ligue 1 title status to table-toppers Lille, worries were growing that Neymar and Mbappe could be looking to ply their trade elsewhere.
However, PSG fans can breathe a sigh of relief as news came flowing through that they had tied down one out of their two stars so far.
Neymar Jr has put pen to paper on a new contract extension at PSG until 2025 and since joining Les Rouge et Bleus in 2017 he has won nine trophies in four years;
Three Ligue 1 titles (2018, 2019 & 2020)
Two Coupes de France (2018 & 2020)
Two Coupes de la Ligue (2018, & 2020)
Two Trophées des Champions (2018 & 2020)
However, one title has so far eluded him in Paris. The Champions League. And despite helping them reach the final last year they lost to Bayern Munich and could only get as far as the semi-finals this season before falling short to Manchester City.
So, there is no wonder that he wants to stay on and try and take PSG that one step further to actually winning the Champions League, along with every other title he has with Les Parisiens so far.
Neymar speaking about his contract extension said;
“I’m really pleased to continue my adventure at Paris Saint-Germain. I’m very happy in Paris, and proud to be part of this squad, to work with these players, a great coach and to be part of the history of this club. These are things that make me believe even more in this great project. I have grown as a person here, as a human being and as a player, too. So I am very happy to extend my contract and I hope to win many more trophies here.”
Of course, if reports from The Sun are to be believed though, a bumper £500,000 a week deal surely would not have been the turning point for Neymar to sign now would it.
Chairman and CEO of PSG Nasser Al-Khelaifi has also expressed his joy at Neymar’s signing stating;
“The core of our ambitious project to grow PSG is the heart, talent and dedication of our players. I am proud that Neymar Jr has reaffirmed his long-term commitment to the PSG family through to 2025 and will continue to delight fans. We are very happy to see him continue as part of our project and to be alongside us for many years to come.”
Despite the good news about Neymar, PSG will no doubt be hoping that Mbappe soon follows his teammate and signs an extension too as they look to build a Ligue 1 and Champions League winning team around two of their biggest stars to date.
