Tottenham agree £22.5m deal for Brighton midfielder Yves Bissouma

Tottenham have agreed a deal worth in the region of £22.5m with Brighton and Hove Albion for central midfielder Yves Bissouma.

Yves Bissouma could join Arsenal

The Malian international, 25, whose contract with Brighton expires in the summer of 2023, has made 124 appearances since joining the south coast club from Lille in 2018. The midfielder started 25 Premier League games for the Seagulls last season, scoring once. He played an important role in Graham Potter’s side as they clinched a ninth-place finish in the Premier League.

Yves Bissouma is set to sign a five-year contract with Spurs and is scheduled to undergo a medical on Thursday. Should he pass the medical, the 25-year-old would become Tottenham boss Antonio Conte’s third summer signing, following the captures of goalkeeper Fraser Forster and winger Ivan Perisic, whose contracts were up at Southampton and Inter Milan respectively.

Antonio Conte planning midfield upgrade

Tottenham have shown in this summer transfer window that they mean business. The north Londoners are interested in a deal for Richarlison of Everton, with the Toffees keen to get upwards of €60 million for their Brazilian forward. They are also interested in re-signing Christian Eriksen.

Eriksen, 30, is available to sign on a Bosman transfer as his short-term deal with Brentford expires at the end of this month. The Danish playmaker joined Thomas Frank’s Bees in January and made a telling impact, helping the club achieve safety in their first season in the English top-flight.

Antonio Conte is seemingly planning to upgrade his midfield options ahead of the 2022/23 season. Rodrigo Bentancur arrived from Juventus in January and seamlessly settled into the Spurs side, building a solid partnership with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg at the heart of their midfield for the rest of the campaign. But Conte wants more bite and experience in his midfield following Spurs’ qualification to the Champions League.

Yves Bissouma could make a difference for Spurs

With Conte guiding Spurs back into the Champions League, the board are doing the right thing by providing him with the financial backing by addressing the issues within the team. The Italian tactician wants to bolster his midfield options, which currently has the likes of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Oliver Skipp, Rodrigo Bentancur and Harry Winks.

Thus, signing Yves Bissouma would instantly lift the quality of Spurs’ midfield, adding energy, experience and industry. He has impressed with his displays at Brighton in the last couple of seasons and has the qualities to blossom under Conte at Tottenham.

The Malian international is perhaps right in wanting to make the jump to a bigger club than Brighton in the Premier League, making a potential move to Spurs really exciting for various reasons.
