Newcastle United have completed the signing of Denmark under-21 international William Osula from Championship side Sheffield United.
The 21-year-old, who has five caps for Denmark Under21s, joins the Toon Army for a fee of £15m. The striker had moved to Sheffield United from FC Copenhagen in 2018. He has left the Blades after scoring three goals in 31 appearances across all competitions.
William Osula had made 21 Premier League appearances in the Premier League last term as Chris Wilder’s side finished bottom of the table and subsequently suffered relegation to the Championship. The young Dane has become Newcastle United’s sixth signing of the summer transfer window, after the acquisitions of John Ruddy, Lloyd Kelly, Miodrag Pivas, Odysseas Vlachodimos and Lewis Hall, whose loan move from Chelsea was turned into a permanent deal.
“It’s a big club, a great club, so I’m very happy for the opportunity to join Newcastle United,” said Osula in his first interview on the club’s official website.
“It’s a great opportunity, and as soon as I heard about Newcastle’s interest, I knew I had to take the chance to join this club if it came.”
The Magpies boss Eddie Howe added: “William is a talented young forward with all the attributes to be an exciting player for Newcastle United.
“We have watched his development closely and we are delighted to have the opportunity to work with him in this next step in his career.
“I know our supporters will join me in giving William a very warm welcome to the club and the city.”
William Osula has the chance to prove himself in the Premier League
Osula demonstrated his potential in patches at Sheffield United in the Premier League, but under an astute tactician in Eddie Howe, he will get coaching and opportunities to grow and achieve big things in a Newcastle shirt.
The Denmark youth international, capable of operating through the middle and in wide areas, will face competition from Anthony Gordon, Aleksander Isak, Callum Wilson, Jacob Murphy, Miguel Almiron and Harvey Barnes for a place in the starting XI. With so many games to play across different domestic competitions in the upcoming season, the 21-year-old is expected to get plenty of opportunities.
Over the years in English football, Eddie Howe has been renowned for nurturing young talents and helping them unlock their true potential. So, Osula must feel he is in safe hands at St James’ Park.
