Manchester United have signed Ajax midfielder Donny van de Beek after agreeing on a fee of £35m. The Dutch midfielder will move to Old Trafford on a five-year deal. The team from Old Trafford was interested in van de Beek last year, but one year later he became the new member of The Red Devils.

Van de Beek had been previously touted to leave Ajax this summer, with plenty of clubs interested in his services – including the failed deal of Real Madrid. In recent days, Man Utd emerged as the frontrunners to sign Van de Beek after he was left out of the squad in a friendly game, with Erik ten Hag stating the decision as a measure to evaluate his future. United have finally landed the 23-year-old amid interest from FC Barcelona. Van de Beek will mark the first signing of Man Utd in the transfer window.

A long-time servant of Ajax from his youth career, Van de Beek broke into the prominence in the last two seasons, where goals and assists galore from his foot. Especially the 18/19 season was his best as he played a key role behind Ajax’s impressive run in the Champions League, which ended in the semi-finals

Upon signing for the Red Devils, Van de Beek said,

“I cannot begin to explain how incredible an opportunity it is to join a club with such an amazing history.”

“I am now ready to take the next step in my career and perform at the highest level and there is no higher standard than Manchester United.

“This team has some of the best midfielders in the world and I know that I can learn from them and also bring my own strengths to the group.

“Having spoken to the manager about his vision for this team, the direction that the club is going in is hugely exciting and I cannot wait to be a part of that.”

Man Utd boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is also excited about the Dutch midfielder.

“Donny has all of the technical attributes needed to perform in this team and has the personality required to succeed at Manchester United.

“His ability to see space, time his movements and read the game will really complement the qualities that we have in midfield and his arrival really strengthens the depth of talent we have in that position.”

The Norwegian is perhaps right as Van de Beek’s addition would add depth to the squad, although it remains to be seen whether he can achieve the starting berth straight away.

Van de Beek has decided to wear the No.34 shirt as a tribute to his long-time friend and former Ajax team-mate Abdelhak Nouri.

Now the biggest question is where Van de Beek will play if Solskjaer opts for him as a starter. Nonetheless, all the midfield position is up for grabs with the Dutchman’s arrival.
