Both Lautaro Martinez and Romelu Lukaku scored a brace as Inter reach a European final in ten years.
When Antonio Conte joined Juventus 2011 he won the Serie A in his first season and he repeated the same feat with Chelsea in 2017. He could not do the same with Inter but he close to winning a trophy and maintaining his record of winning a trophy in his first season in charge of a club.
Inter Milan are now in the final of the Europa League where they will take on Sevilla who won 2-1 against Manchester United in the other semi-final.
The Italians did not enjoy the majority of the possession but they created far better chances than Shakhtar. Antonio Conte had set up his team very well defensively where they would often sit tight at the centre and let Shakhtar move the ball.
The Ukrainians prefer to open up their opposition through the middle rather than from wide. Thus they struggled as they had no real presence inside the box and Inter fully imposed their physical dominance over them.
Both teams tried to play from the back and press each other but none of them managed to get a grip on the game. There were fouls here and there and both the teams could not maintain possession. Things changed when Shakhtar goalkeeper Andriy Pyatov took a goal kick but it did not reach its intended target and it was intercepted by Inter. Nico Barella found himself on the right and in swung in a cross which was met by Martinez’s head who was running towards the goal.
After that goal, the game started to settle down a bit and Shakhtar started to dominate possession and Inter looked to hit them on the counter. Despite having more possession Shakhtar were unable to trouble Samir Handanovic’s goal. While Inter were unable to create any big opportunities after that.
The second half started in the same way as the first half ended Shakhtar tried to have possession and attack Inter, while the Italians looked to hit them on the counter. The Miners’ best chance came when a cross was flung in from the left with inch-perfect accuracy for Taison but the Brazilian failed to get a decent connection on the ball and it was easy save for Handanovic.
As the Ukrainians missed their chance Inter got their second from a corner kick as Danilo D’Ambrosio rose above all to head it in. The Nerrazruri got their third when Shakhtar defender Serhiy Kryvtsov had to deal with two Inter players in Martinez and Gagliardini from a through ball. Martinez took advantage of that as he slotted the ball in the bottom right-hand corner. After that goal, it looked like Shakhtar have given up and to add more misery Romelu Lukaku added a fourth and fifth goal in six minutes.
