Tottenham could revive interest in Galatasaray defender Victor Nelsson after a potential move in the summer broke down.

The North London club held a big interest in Victor Nelsson during the summer transfer window, much before landing Micky van de Ven from Wolfsburg. The Danish defender, 25, had his heart set on a move to Spurs, but instead, he remained at Galatasaray as the Turkish club were reluctant to sell him for below €30 million.

Victor Nelsson helped Galatasaray win the Turkish Super Lig last season, thereby, attracting Tottenham’s attention. New Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou wanted to sign him as well as Van de Ven but only managed to sign the Dutch centre-back. However, he is reportedly set to revive interest in the Denmark international when the transfer window reopens in January.

With Nelsson in no mood to sign a contract extension and Spurs retaining an interest, he could leave Galatasaray for as little as €20 million.

Spurs retain interest in Victor Nelsson

Following Davinson Sanchez’s departure to Galatasaray in the summer, Tottenham have just Eric Dier as cover for the current centre-back pairing of Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven, so it is believed they would target a centre-back during the winter transfer window. Victor Nelsson is among the centre-back options Ange Postecoglou could target.

Nelsson has enjoyed a strong start to the season and has made 13 appearances so far, although he has seen his role reduced to that of a substitute in the club’s last three games. He has been with Galatasaray since 2021 and has shown his quality in the Turkish league, so the defender perhaps thinks of taking the next step in his career now. The opportunity to play in the Premier League and become a part of Spurs’ exciting rebuild under Postecoglou can be hard to turn down for the 25-year-old.

Spurs have started the season extremely well and are currently unbeaten in the league. They sit at the summit of the table and will be hoping to qualify for the Champions League next term. Bringing in a quality defender in January to cover and compete with the likes of Romero, Van de Ven and Dier could prove to be a wise decision and reinforce their hopes of playing in the elite European competition in 2024.

At 25, Nelsson fits the profile perfectly and could bring some much-needed depth to Spurs’ defensive ranks. The Dane is likely to improve with time, age and experience, so he could justify the €20 million investment in the coming years.
