Tottenham Hotspur monitoring Udinese full-back Festy Ebosele

Tottenham Hotspur are chasing Udinese full-back Festy Ebosele but face competition from Leeds United.

Festy Ebosele

Festy Ebosele’s move to Udinese from Derby County in 2022 has proven to be successful, with the full-back thriving in Serie A. The Republic of Ireland international has featured regularly for Udinese this season, catching the eye with his pace, power and potential. He has made 25 appearances in Serie A—19 starts and six substitute appearances, although the 21-year-old is yet to register either a goal or an assist.

Tottenham are reportedly tracking Ebosele’s progress in Serie A, but they aren’t the only Premier League club interested in him. Everton and West Ham United have scouted the wing-back this season, while Southampton have joined fellow Championship side Leeds in the race for his signature.

Tottenham want more depth beyond Destiny Udogie, Pedro Porro

Tottenham recruited Destiny Udogie from Udinese last year and the left-back has turned out to be one of their best players in Ange Postecoglou’s first season in charge. Udogie along with his fellow full-back Pedro Porro have thrived in Postecoglou’s attacking system, providing Spurs with energy, creativity, width and flexibility. The duo have been provided with the license to go forward, take central positions more and get involved in attacks.

Between Udogie and Porro, the pair have two goals and 11 assists in the Premier League this season, whereas Ben Davies and Emerson Royal have deputised well at times. Nonetheless, Davies and Royal are not at the same level as Spurs’ first-choice full-backs, especially the latter not consistent enough to provide quality performances week in and week out.

That said, Spurs have been looking to recruit a new full-back to compete with Udogie and Porro next season. They could go back to raid Udinese for Festy Ebosele after unearthing a gem in Udogie. Given Udogie’s quick acclimatisation to the Premier League and huge potential, the north London club are understood to be happy to look at Udinese for fresh talent, and Ebosele has emerged on their radar.

The Republic of Ireland international’s main attributes are his pace, energy and doggedness, and at 21, he is someone who possesses a lot of potential and room to develop—despite improving both technically and tactically in Serie A. Ebosele could develop under Postecoglou’s watchful eyes and arrive at Spurs as an upgrade on Emerson.

As Ebosele is under contract until 2027, Udinese are in a position where they can ask a handsome fee for his services in the summer.
