Arsenal are interested in signing Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi but must pay his full release clause to acquire his services this month.
After Gabriel Jesus’ injury, Mikel Arteta has been dealt with another blow as Mohamed Elneny could be out for the rest of the season with a knee injury. Elneny’s untimely injury has now left Arteta with Thomas Partey, Granit Xhaka and Albert Sambi Lokonga as the only options in central midfield. So, Arteta wants to sign a new central midfielder ahead of the transfer deadline.
Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi has emerged as a target for the Gunners. Zubimendi, 23, has shone in La Liga this season, playing a key role in Real Sociedad’s rise to third in the table. The Spanish enforcer has made 23 appearances in all competitions, scoring one goal while also providing three assists. He is highly rated across the continent and has been firmly on the radar of Barcelona since last summer.
In fact, Zubimendi is believed to be aware of Barcelona’s interest, but it appears he is now fancying his chances of moving to the Premier League and joining Arsenal. The 23-year-old midfielder has every opportunity of donning the Arsenal colours this month as long as the north London club pay the €60 million release clause.
Martin Zubimendi could be a classy addition to Arsenal’s midfield ranks
Arsenal have strengthened their squad in this transfer window by signing attacker Leandro Trossard from Brighton and defender Jakub Kiwior from Spezia Calcio. After bolstering the defensive and attacking units, Mikel Arteta has shifted his focus toward adding to his midfield in the wake of Mohamed Elneny’s long-term injury.
The Gunners boss has seemingly set his sights on Real Sociedad star Martin Zubimendi. One-cap Spain international has been in good form in La Liga this term, and it’s little surprise to see him attract interest from Arsenal as we edge closer to the end of the transfer window.
Zubimendi would be a terrific fit for Arsenal right now, with Mikel Arteta’s side perhaps in need of a bit more depth in midfield alongside Thomas Partey and Granit Xhaka, who have rarely enjoyed a breather at any point this season. Any injury to either Partey or Xhaka would have a major impact on the Gunners’ title assault, and Arteta would want to avoid any crisis.
That’s when Zubimendi’s acquisition could add a lot of value to this Arsenal side. The Sociedad midfielder is one of the most exciting young talents in La Liga and is already competing at a high level at 23 years old. He would push Partey and Xhaka to up their level, whilst adding much-needed quality depth to the club’s engine room. Also as Xhaka is 30 years old, the Spaniard could be the long-term replacement and play in the Arsenal midfield for the best part of this decade.
With just a few days left for the transfer window to slam shut, Arsenal must not waste any more time and get Zubimendi’s signature by paying his €60 million release clause.
