Newcastle United submit offer for Barcelona winger Ferran Torres

Newcastle United are interested in signing Barcelona winger Ferran Torres in this transfer window.

Ferran Torres

The Spain international, 24, remains a sought-after commodity despite not being a regular starter for Barcelona last season. He registered 11 goals and four assists for Blaugrana and was the second-highest scorer in the squad along with Fermin Lopez, only behind Robert Lewandowski.

Following the appointment of former Bayern Munich and Germany national team coach Hansi Flick, Ferran Torres finds himself in a precious position at Camp Nou. The 24-year-old winger has emerged as one of the players the club could offload in this ongoing transfer window, to make way for new signings and balance the books.

There has been no shortage of suitors for the Spaniard either, with Newcastle United keen on the player’s signature. The Toon Army have reportedly submitted a formal offer worth €15 million plus €5 million in add-ons for Torres, who is contracted to Barcelona until 2027.

Newcastle aiming for high-profile acquisitions despite no European football

Newcastle United finished seventh in the Premier League last season and were primed to play in the Europa Conference League, only for Manchester United’s FA Cup success over Manchester City that denied them a spot in Europe altogether. Despite no European football, they are leaving no stone unturned to bolster the squad with high-profile signings.

The Magpies are looking at strengthening their attacking options for the 2024/25 season and want Ferran Torres to be a part of Eddie Howe’s squad. Torres can operate on both wings as well as a No.9, and he could potentially form a formidable partnership with Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon at Newcastle. He would enhance Newcastle’s quality in attack while adding much-needed depth to the squad, giving Eddie Howe options to rotate his team when required.

However, it is understood Torres doesn’t want to leave Barcelona this summer. He wants to continue fighting for his spot and prove himself to new manager Hansi Flick. Moreover, Barcelona deem Newcastle’s current offer unsatisfactory and are likely to reject it in the coming days.

For a player of Torres’ quality and experience, the Magpies have to cough up more if they are to persuade Barcelona into selling him. For now, both Barcelona and Torres remain uninterested in entertaining Newcastle.
