Bayern Munich star Serge Gnabry has emerged as a transfer target for Newcastle United boss Serge Gnabry.
Having joined Bayern Munich from Werder Bremen in the summer of 2017, Serge Gnabry, 29, has tasted rich success at the Allianz Arena. The versatile German has bagged 86 goals and 53 assists in 238 games across all competitions, lifting 13 major honours with Bayern Munich.
However, he could be on the move after Bayern added Michael Olise to their attacking ranks earlier this month. Should Gnabry decide to leave the Bavarian giants, Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe will reportedly pounce on the opportunity to sign him. However, the Magpies could face competition from the Germany international’s former club Arsenal.
Newcastle United looking for reinforcements in wide areas
After an underwhelming 2023/24 campaign that saw Newcastle finish seventh in the Premier League table, Eddie Howe and the recruitment team have wasted no time in strengthening the squad. The likes of Lloyd Kelly, Odysseas Vlachodimos and John Ruddy have arrived as fresh faces to St James’ Park, as Howe prepares for the forthcoming 2024/25 campaign.
Having bolstered the defensive and goalkeeping ranks, the Newcastle tactician has now shifted his focus towards adding to his attacking roster. He is eyeing a winger this summer to reduce his team’s over-reliance on the likes of Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon. Signing a versatile player who can operate on both flank could be decisive, and Serge Gnabry would be a brilliant fit at the club.
Gnabry failed to make the grade at Arsenal as he managed only 10 appearances under the legendary Arsene Wenger before joining German side Werder Bremen. The move worked wonders as he managed to kickstart his professional career, and after just a season in Bremen colours, Bayern snapped him up.
The 45-cap Germany international has been a crucial player for Bayern over the years, impressing with his trickery, imagination, flair and goalscoring ability. Now that the club has acquired the services of highly-rated Frenchman Michel Olise from Crystal Palace, his future has been plunged into doubt.
That being said, Gnabry has already found a suitor in Newcastle, who could launch a £40 million bid to sign him from Bayern. But it won’t be an easy deal for the Toon Army to crack as Arsenal are also keeping tabs on their former player. If it comes down to a straight shootout between Newcastle and Arsenal, the latter would be at an advantage due to the lure of Champions League football.
Thus, if Gnabry hints about leaving the Bundesliga giants this summer, Newcastle must act quickly to beat Arsenal to his signature.
