Manchester United have identified Juventus star Gleison Bremer as a target to bolster their defensive ranks ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.
The Red Devils’ defence has been the subject of heavy criticism from fans and pundits alike this season and it has become absolutely clear that new co-owners INEOS must find a solution in the upcoming transfer window. Several defenders’ futures at the club are up in the air, as Raphael Varane is heading into the final month of his contract and the likes of Jonny Evans and Harry Maguire could be playing their football away from Old Trafford next season.
Consequently, Manchester United have been linked with many defenders to replace these possible outgoings. Juventus’ Gleison Bremer has been on their radar for some time now. Following a stellar season with the Old Lady, the 20-time English champions are reportedly planning to offer Bremer, 27, wages of around €10 million per season and pay €50 million for his services. Atletico Madrid are also interested in the Brazilian centre-half, who is valued at around €70 million by Juventus.
Is Gleison Bremer the right fit for Manchester United?
Manchester United have been all over the place defensively throughout the season, owing to injury problems for every central defender in the squad. None of their senior centre-backs have managed to stay fit, leading to constant chopping and changing at the back and a lack of stability in Erik ten Hag’s side.
With Varane nearing the end of his contract, Evans well past his prime and the likes of Lindelof and Maguire facing uncertain futures at Old Trafford, the Red Devils are prioritising a defensive overhaul. They will have to tighten up at the back to compete for major trophies and qualify for the Champions League, a signing player of Gleison Bremer’s quality could benefit immensely.
Having proven himself in Italy with Torino and Juventus, Bremer appears ready to test himself in the Premier League. A move to Man United would be a step up in his career and he could angle for a move if a concrete proposal is tabled. The Brazilian international would be a solid replacement for the outgoing Varane while being an upgrade on both Maguire and Lindelof.
Without a doubt, signing a top-quality centre-back seems to be the biggest focus of Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his team and it will be interesting to see if they decide that Bremer is the right fit at the club.
