Liverpool join transfer race for Juventus defender Gleison Bremer

Liverpool have joined Manchester United and Chelsea in the race for Juventus defender Gleison Bremer.

Gleison Bremer

Gleison Bremer, 27, swapped Turin rivals Torino for Juventus in the summer of 2022 and has been one of the consistent performers since then. He has made 83 appearances across all competitions for Juventus across two seasons, chipping in with eight goals and helping win the Coppa Italia this past campaign.

It is therefore unsurprising that the Brazil international has been linked with a move to the Premier League. Liverpool are now reportedly tracking Bremer over a potential move this summer, with the Juventus star rated at over £60m. No signs of any talks so far, though, but things could change now that the centre-back’s participation with Brazil at the Copa America is over following the quarter-finals defeat to Uruguay on Sunday.

Liverpool are in the market for a new central defender

The Arne Slot era at Liverpool is underway and he is eager to make an impression on the squad inherited from Jurgen Klopp. The Reds are looking to reinforce their squad with quality additions to bridge the gap on defending English champions Manchester City, so there’s plenty of work to be down in this transfer window.

The new Liverpool boss has made the signing of a central defender one of his priorities, especially after the release of seasoned campaigner Joel Matip upon the expiry of his contract at the end of June. This has left him with Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, Joe Gomez and Jarell Quansah as centre-back options, but for the Merseysiders to challenge for major honours in the upcoming season, he certainly needs more depth in that position.

Perhaps that is why the Reds have entered the race for Gleison Bremer. During his spells with Torino and Juventus, the 27-year-old has established himself as one of the best centre-backs in Serie A. He possesses the physicality, aerial prowess and leadership skills to thrive in the fast-paced nature of Premier League football.

In terms of fitness and durability, the Brazilian would be an upgrade on Konate in the Liverpool squad. Bremer would complement Van Dijk at the back, adding much-needed strength and power to Arne Slot’s team. At 27, he is operating at the peak of his powers and should make an immediate impact at Anfield.

Now that Bremer’s international duty with Brazil is over, Liverpool must act quickly and steal a march over rival suitors for his signature. They must bring the Juventus star in before moving on to pursuing other summer targets.
