Manchester United eye Feyenoord defender Tyrell Malacia

Incoming Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is hoping to make Feyenoord left-back Tyrell Malacia his first signing in the summer.

Tyrell Malacia

A product of the Rotterdam club’s academy system, Tyrell Malacia, 22, made his senior debut back in 2017 and hasn’t looked back since. The defender has racked up 133 appearances for Feyenoord in all competitions, including 47 appearances so far this season. He has also broken into the Dutch national team, earning his first cap last year.

Erik ten Hag tried to sign Malacia for Ajax but Feyenoord resisted selling him due to the two club’s rivalry. However, things could change in his new workplace as Ten Hag looks keen to bring the three-cap Netherlands international to Old Trafford. In fact, Manchester United had sent scouts to watch the player in action during Feyenoord’s 3-2 win over Marseille in the first leg of the Europa Conference semi-finals last week.

Man United to undergo a squad rebuild

Erik ten Hag will arrive at Manchester United at the end of the season and is expected to oversee a squad overhaul after a forgettable season. A host of players are approaching the end of their contracts and are expected to leave the club in the summer, including the likes of Nemanja Matic, Juan Mata, Edinson Cavani, Paul Pogba and Jesse Lingard.

The Red Devils have given up their hopes of making it to the top four after last weekend’s 3-1 away defeat to Arsenal. While they escaped with a 1-1 draw with Chelsea at Old Trafford recently, the club’s miserable campaign under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick demonstrated the massive changes required at Old Trafford.

Tyrell Malacia could be a boost to Man United’s backline

Ten Hag is expected to be significantly backed in the transfer market so that he can start the club’s revival. Though the transfer budget alone may not be sufficient to plug all the holes in the squad in one window, thus, the Dutch tactician is willing to sell a few players in order to bolster his transfer kitty.

Left-back Alex Telles is among those names Manchester United are willing to listen to offers at the end of the campaign. The Brazilian international, who has failed to cement his place in the first XI since arriving from FC Porto in 2020, appears to have been deemed surplus to requirements by the Reds’ incoming boss.

Tyrell Malacia could be the player to replace Telles at Old Trafford. Malacia fits the profile of a young, talented and hungry player with a lot of potential Ten Hag wants to sign for his new club. The Dutchman would be a boost to the Red Devils’ backline that has already leaked over 50 goals with three games to play this term.

It is believed that a £20m offer could be enough to persuade Feyenoord to part ways with Malacia, who is regarded as arguably the best left-back in the Eredivisie. With Luke Shaw struggling with fitness and form this season and Telles isn’t up to the standard to play week in, week out in the Premier League, thus, it is no surprise Ten Hag wants to make the Feyenoord prodigy his first signing at Man United.
