Liverpool linked with a move for Christian Pulisic

Liverpool are among a few top European clubs linked with a summer move for Chelsea winger Christian Pulisic.

pulisic could join Liverpool

Christian Pulisic, 22, is yet to start a Premier League game under new Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel, who actually gave the winger his breakthrough at Borussia Dortmund. The USA international has come off the bench six times in nine league games under Tuchel, with his only start coming against Barnsley in the FA Cup last month.

The 22-year-old, who was one of the Blues’ best performers post football’s Covid lockdown, has really struggled to stay fit since joining Chelsea from Borussia Dortmund in January 2019. He has made just 22 appearances across all competitions this season, scoring only twice.

It is vital for Pulisic to stay fit but he could push for a summer move away if his situation doesn’t improve at Stamford Bridge, with Manchester United and Bayern Munich also keeping tabs on his situation.

Liverpool’s top-four hopes in jeopardy

Liverpool have endured a disastrous season, as they currently sit eighth in the table having lost four out of their last five Premier League games. A dismal run of domestic form has led to the Reds drop seven points adrift of Champions League spots, behind the likes of Tottenham, Everton and West Ham.

The most concerning thing for Jurgen Klopp is that his team is struggling to buy a win at Anfield. Liverpool have lost six successive games at home with relegation-threatened Fulham the latest team to leave Anfield with all three points. It is the first time the Merseysiders have lost six matches in a row at home in a Premier League campaign.

Injuries to key performers have not only wrecked the Reds’ title defence but also put their top-four hopes in jeopardy. The only way Liverpool can qualify for next season’s Champions League is by winning the competition having secured a place in the quarter-finals with a 4-0 aggregate victory over RB Leipzig.

The Reds need more depth in attack

It cannot be argued that one of the factors for Liverpool’s challenging 2020/21 season has been their misfiring attack. The front-three of Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah have come in for plenty of criticism. The goals have unbelievably dried up, especially at Anfield, with the Reds managing just four goals in their previous six league games.

One of the areas the Liverpool boss should strengthen during the summer transfer window is the depth in his attack. During the difficult times when Klopp expected the likes of Xherdan Shaqiri, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Divock Origi to step up and be counted, none of them have delivered the goods. Apart from the positives of academy graduate Curtis Jones’ progress and the return of Diogo Jota from injury recently, Klopp has a lot to ponder ahead of the new campaign.

Certainly, it’ll make sense for the Reds to add more quality and depth in their attack to return back stronger next season.

Should Liverpool make a move for Christian Pulisic?

Klopp has worked with Pulisic before, and while he never played a senior game for the German tactician, the winger joined Borussia Dortmund as a teenager in 2015, shortly before Klopp left for Liverpool.

Pulisic has endured a tough season at Chelsea but there’s no doubting his quality and potential to improve. Predominantly a left-winger, he can also be deployed on the right, and the 22-year-old’s pace, power, flair and work ethic would make him a top fit at Klopp’s Reds. Under the tutelage of Klopp, the former Dortmund man can sharpen his skills, which can be useful for both the USA and Liverpool.

Thus, Liverpool must not hesitate to sign Pulisic if he decides to leave Chelsea in the summer.
