Real Madrid star Ferland Mendy has emerged on the radars of Liverpool and Arsenal.
The Frenchman, 28, joined Real Madrid from Lyon back in 2019 and has clocked 165 appearances thus far, registering six goals and ten assists in the process. Despite not being a regular starter over the years, he has enjoyed a trophy-laden spell at the Santiago Bernabeu, winning the Champions League and La Liga twice as well as the Copa del Rey.
However, Ferland Mendy will have just one year left on his contract at Real Madrid this summer, and the La Liga heavyweights are considering to cash in on him at the end of the campaign. That is because Real Madrid are confident of signing Alphonso Davies from Bayern Munich, with the Canadian international, whose contract expires in 2025, yet to pen fresh terms at the Allianz Arena.
A host of Premier League clubs are aware that Mendy could be sold by Los Blancos this summer. Both Liverpool and Arsenal have reportedly opened talks with the representatives of the 28-year-old over a possible move to the Premier League.
Ferland Mendy’s future at Real Madrid open
Arsenal are understood to be keen on signing a new left-back this summer, with Mikel Arteta switching between the likes of Jakub Kiwior, Oleksandr Zinchenko and Takehiro Tomiyasu. Zinchenko and Tomiyasu’s injury problems have forced Arteta to play Kiwior, who is a centre-back by trade, at left-back.
With doubts over Zinchenko’s defensive frailties and fitness, the Gunners could do well by signing Ferland Mendy. The Real Madrid star should be an upgrade on Zinchenko whilst bringing much-needed European experience to the Arsenal squad.
Meanwhile, Liverpool are seeking quality competition for Andy Robertson, who has endured an injury-curtailed campaign. Kostas Tsimikas hasn’t proven to be a decent deputy, while Joe Gomez prefers playing on the right-hand side of the back four. That said, the Reds’ interest in Mendy makes sense.
The nine-cap French international would be a smart addition to the Liverpool backline, providing solid back-up and competition for Robertson. In terms of technical ability, defensive nous and experience, he would be viewed as an instant upgrade on Tsimikas. However, the Merseyside club’s liking for the ex-Lyon man could largely depend on who replaces Jurgen Klopp at the helm, as the move will need to be approved by the club’s next manager.
Madrid have yet to set their asking price for Mendy, who could be attracted to playing for either Arsenal or Liverpool in the Premier League.
