West Ham eye move for Arsenal left-back Nuno Tavares

West Ham are set to make a summer move for Arsenal’s Nuno Tavares, who is currently on loan with French club Marseille.

Nuno Tavares

Nuno Tavares, 23, has excelled with Marseille in Ligue 1, bagging six goals in 29 appearances. However, he was recently left out of the squad for a key game against LOSC Lille due to alleged attitude problems during training sessions. This has added to the Portuguese wing-back’s growing uncertainty surrounding his future at Marseille.

However, Tavares has returned to training after a spell of internal disciplinary. He will return to Arsenal this summer after his loan spell in Ligue 1. The 23-year-old, who has two years left on his contract, hasn’t been able to cut it at the Emirates Stadium since joining the club in 2021 from Benfica and is now deemed surplus to requirements. As a result, he is one of the players that the Gunners will look to offload.

Tavares’ potential availability has reportedly alerted West Ham and they now have shown an interest to sign him during the upcoming summer transfer window.

Are West Ham planning for Aaron Cresswell’s future?

West Ham boss David Moyes is in the market for a new left-back. It definitely is one of the priority positions for Moyes to strengthen for the next season as he hunts for a long-term upgrade on Aaron Cresswell.

Cresswell has been a great servant for West Ham but his contract expires at the end of the season. He is 33 and past his prime, so it remains to be seen whether Moyes and the club agree to hand the Englishman a new contract. Even if he signs a new contract, Moyes wants to bring in a new left-back after Emerson Palmieri’s lacklustre displays this season.

Arsenal’s Nuno Tavares has emerged as an option for West Ham. With Arsenal currently having Oleksandr Zinchenko and Kieran Tierney as left-backs on their books, Tavares’ game time will be minimal next season. Having enjoyed a strong season with Marseille in Ligue 1, it will not be justified for the Portuguese to settle on the bench at Arsenal next year.

So, the best option for Tavares will be to leave the Gunners in the summer in a bid to resurrect his career. And a move to West Ham could work well for him, with the 23-year-old having the attributes to play under Moyes. His versatility could prove to be useful for West Ham when playing as a left wing-back in a three-man backline.

Despite him failing to cut the mustard at Arsenal, West Ham must not hesitate to hand Tavares a lifeline in the Premier League.
