Chelsea initiate contact with RB Leipzig to sign Dani Olmo

Chelsea have started discussions with RB Leipzig to sign coveted playmaker Dani Olmo, who has a €60m release clause in his contract that will become active starting this summer.

Dani Olmo

Dani Olmo, 25, unbelievably started the season, grabbing the headlines with a sublime hat-trick in RB Leipzig’s 3-0 win over Bayern Munich in the DFL-Supercup back in August. However, since then the Spaniard has had troubles with injuries, limiting him to just 15 Bundesliga appearances. In those, he has registered three goals and four assists. The creative midfielder scored a spectacular goal in Spain’s friendly 3-3 draw with Brazil during the recently concluded international break.

The 25-year-old’s performances in recent weeks have continued to draw in scouts from top European clubs. Chelsea have been reportedly monitoring Olmo for a long while and they seem determined to bring him to Stamford Bridge this summer. However, they could face competition from Premier League rivals Manchester United, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur for the Spaniard’s signature.

Chelsea want to move on Conor Gallagher and Raheem Sterling

Chelsea will look to offload Conor Gallagher in the summer to balance their books. And out-of-sorts Raheem Sterling is also expected to leave, as the west Londoners eye a shake-up in the attacking unit. They are in the market for a new centre-forward, creative midfielder, centre-back and full-back this summer. Much will hinge on who leaves the club, but Chelsea remain open to moving on Gallagher and Sterling.

Dani Olmo emerges as Chelsea target

The Blues have identified RB Leipzig’s Dani Olmo as a potential replacement for Gallagher. They have made the Spaniard one of their top targets for the summer transfer window and have already held discussions with RB Leipzig over a transfer.

Olmo transferred to Leipzig from Croatian club Dinamo Zagreb in 2020 and has been a vital player for the Bundesliga outfit since notching 28 goals and 33 assists in 142 games. Renowned for his creativity, movement and goalscoring ability, the 25-year-old’s style of play fits Mauricio Pochettino’s attacking philosophy. He is a technically gifted and versatile customer, capable of playing on either the flank or through the middle.

The talented playmaker’s €60m release clause will become active from the summer transfer window, and while that might not be a bargain, it would represent a fair value based on Olmo’s performances for Leipzig and Spain over the last couple of years.
