Rojiblancos make contact with Napoli striker.
Atletico Madrid have reportedly made contact with Napoli over the signing of Polish striker Arkadiusz Milik, who is also said to be watched by Juventus. However, Bianconeri is said to have backed off the race after finding his £40m price tag too expensive. The Polish striker’s contract expires next year, and the Partenopei have no issues in letting him go this summer if they fail to strike a new deal. The report also adds that Atletico are keen on Milik’s service and are ready to offer him double the wages he currently earns with Napoli.
Milik has been impressive for Napoli this season, finding the nets 13 times – the club’s highest scorer this term – across all competitions. Although he suffered a string of injuries at the start of the season, Milik kept his goal-scoring form intact. The 26-year-old signed for the Partenopei in 2016 and has since thrived under different managers including the likes of Maurizio Sarri, Carlo Ancelotti and the present manager Genarro Gattuso. For the past few seasons, Napoli have become a powerhouse in the Italian top-flight despite falling short in the title race – Milik had played a big part in that.
Atletico Madrid have been a mixed bag in La Liga this season – their Champions League success varies – although they have made a huge overhaul at the start of the season. The Rojiblancos’ attacking unit had been underwhelming even with the presence of the marquee signing Joao Felix. The Portuguese youngster failed to live up to his price tag from the off; however, he is looking confident lately. Alvaro Morata’s consistency has been an issue while Diego Costa can is no more the lethal striker once he used to be.
Milik can be an ideal solution for Simeone’s counter-attacking style of play. His tall build would help him protect the ball during the direct passage of play, with Felix playing the supportive role. Unlike Morata, who has a poor scoring rate in the league this term, the Polish striker will not be seen squandering any chances in front of the goal. Atletico also can benefit from his aerial ability during the set pieces and also from the crosses of the full-backs and wide midfielders.
With Bianconeri already pulling out of the race, Atletico have hardly any suitors at the moment for Milik. Juve have instead turned their interest towards Wolves striker Raul Jimenez, who was a former player for the Rojiblancos.
Atletico have had a great start following the Pandemic break and are hoping to go ahead of Sevilla in the table. Simeone’s men will face Barcelona in their next fixture away from home.
