Manchester United are among three Premier League clubs interested in Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.

Emiliano Martinez, 30, played a vital role in Argentina’s World Cup campaign in Qatar last year which saw them become champions for the third time in their history. The lanky shot-stopper has been a consistent performer for Aston Villa since joining from Arsenal in 2020, racking up 107 appearances so far.

After three seasons at Villa Park, it is understood Martinez wants to leave the club for pastures new. This has reportedly alerted the likes of Manchester United, Chelsea and Tottenham, with the latter holding the most interest in the player.

Man United in search of David de Gea’s replacement

The goalkeeping situation at Manchester United has been highly debated in recent weeks, with David de Gea’s contract expiring in June. De Gea is expected to sign a new deal on revised salary terms, despite his recent costly errors in goal. However, it is unlikely that the Spaniard would keep his No.1 position intact during the new deal, as Erik ten Hag searches for a new goalkeeper.

Emiliano Martinez would be an instant upgrade on De Gea in goal. The Argentinean World Cup winner has shown his qualities in the Premier League with Aston Villa, and the opportunity to play for a bigger club like Man United will be an attractive option for him.

Emi Martinez would be a good fit for Spurs

Meanwhile, Tottenham need a new goalkeeper as well. Hugo Lloris has been a loyal servant for Spurs since joining from Lyon more than a decade ago but he has been called into question after errors over the last few years.

Whomsoever becomes the next permanent manager of Tottenham must look to bring in a quality young goalkeeper at the start of the new season, and Martinez seems like an ideal fit. Martinez would be a fantastic option to replace Lloris whilst giving stability to the Tottenham backline that has been all over the place this season. It is unlikely though he will be moving to Tottenham following his past links with their north London rivals Arsenal.
