Arsenal make £22 million offer for Getafe striker Borja Mayoral

Arsenal have made a £22 million offer for Getafe striker Borja Mayoral, as Mikel Arteta looks to reinforce his striker department for the crucial second half of the campaign.

Brentford striker Ivan Toney appeared as the Gunners’ No.1 target, but the Bees’ £100 million asking price has already made Mikel Arteta reconsider his options. The North Londoners are in the transfer market for a new striker, and now Arteta is looking at La Liga for a cheaper alternative to Toney.

The Spaniard is understood to have set his sights on Getafe’s Borja Mayoral, who has starred in La Liga this season. However, Getafe have reportedly knocked back Arsenal’s opening bid as they hold out for closer to £39m for Mayoral.

Arsenal closely following Borja Mayoral since November

The Gunners need to bring in a quality goalscorer in this ongoing winter window, especially with players like Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nketiah struggling to score goals consistently. Jesus and Nketiah have a combined tally of only eight Premier League goals, which is not good enough for a club competing for the Premier League title.

With Brentford star Ivan Toney priced out, Mikel Arteta has shifted his focus towards signing Getafe striker Borja Mayoral. The Spaniard, 26, has been impressive this campaign, plundering 14 goals across all competitions so far. He has formed a strong partnership with Manchester United loanee Mason Greenwood, helping Jose Bordalas’ Getafe to ninth in the La Liga standings after 19 games.

Arteta has a strong squad at his disposal but needs a couple of quality additions this month to ease the pressure on Arsenal’s front line and add a fresh spark. Mayoral could be that striker for Arsenal. At 26, the ex-Real Madrid man is heading towards the peak years of his career and is a player full of confidence and belief right now.

Getafe are rightly not open to parting ways with their star marksman in the middle of the campaign are holding out for more money. However, if Arsenal are keen on Mayoral, then they might come back with an improved bid. Only time will tell whether the North London club hold a concrete interest in the 26-year-old striker, who has the qualities to make an immediate impact at the Emirates Stadium.
