Arsenal considering move for Orlando City star Facundo Torres in January

Arsenal are contemplating a January swoop for Orlando City forward Facundo Torres.

Facundo Torres

Facundo Torres, 22, has lighted the Major League Soccer this season, bagging nine goals and claiming a further eight assists in 33 league games for Orlando City. He only moved to Orlando City from Uruguayan side Penarol in January, signing a four-year contract with the option for a further 12 months, and it hasn’t taken much time for the forward to adapt to the demands of the MLS.

Impressed by Torres’ performances for Orlando City, Arsenal are set to hold talks over a deal for the Uruguayan and his agents. It is reported that Toni Lima, a club scout appointed in 2021 after his excellent track record of identifying South American jewels, has persuaded the Gunners to look at the 22-year-old.

Mikel Arteta wants to add a winger in January

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta is keen to add a winger to his squad in January as he looks to boost the club’s hopes of challenging for the Premier League title this term.

The Gunners invested heavily in the summer to reshape their squad under Arteta, but they still require serious squad depth to compete with Manchester City and Liverpool for big prizes in England. Signing a wide player is seemingly at the top of Arteta’s wishlist, a player who can provide competition and cover for Bukayo Saka, who was forced off with an injury in Arsenal’s 5-0 win over Nottingham Forest on Sunday.

Saka has been one of Arsenal’s best players this term, contributing to four goals and five assists in 12 Premier League games. However, he suffered an ankle injury against Nottingham Forest which should ring alarm bells for Arteta, and even though Reiss Nelson came off the bench and scored twice, it is not clear where Nelson’s long-term future lies.

Arsenal to open talks with Facundo Torres

Facundo Torres has impressed in his debut MLS campaign, and his performances have caught the eye of Arsenal. He featured for Orlando City against Arsenal during the pre-season tour of the USA and notably scored in the 3-1 defeat.

Following extensive scouting, the Gunners are set to open talks with Torres ahead of a possible move in January. The club’s wide department needs strengthening, and a possible move for the Uruguayan international can provide the lift Arsenal needs while making a push for the title in the second half of the season.
