Top 12 Biggest Wins in Premier League History

Manchester City’s 8:0 win over Watford in round six of the Premier League and Leicester City away victory against Southampton 0:9, as a result, we rarely see in the Premier League, seeing how the English top-flight is known to be one of the most competitive leagues in the world. Only on rare occasions does one team completely dismantle their opponents, and while Man City’s 8:0 win was an impressive result, it only made it to the top three of the biggest wins in the Premier League’s history.

In this article, we will look over the top 12 biggest wins in the Premier League’s history, starting with Arsenal’s 7:0 win over Everton.

12. Arsenal 7:0 Everton; May 2005

Arsenal finished an impressive 2004/05 season handing Everton a devastating 7:0 defeat, who bear in mind, finished the season fourth, 22 points behind Arsenal, making this feat that much more impressive. On that night, six different Arsenal player scored; van Persie, Pires (2x), Vieira, Bergkamp, Edu and Flamini.

11. Man United 7:0 Barnsley; October 1997

For Man United’s 7:0 win over Barnsley, we have to go back over 20 years, to the year of 1997, when the two sides meet at Old Trafford. The difference in quality between the two sides was immense even back then, which was clearly displayed in the final result that saw Barnsley suffering one of the biggest defeats in EPL history. On that night, Andrew Cole scored a hat-trick, Ryan Giggs scored twice, Paul Scholes once and Karel Poborsky once.

10. Blackburn 7:0 Nottingham Forest; November 1995

November 1995 was the month when Blackburn and Nottingham Forest produced one of the biggest wins/defeats in the EPL history, which was not only a shocking result in terms of the number of goals but in terms of which side won. Forest travelled to Ewood Park with a 25-match unbeaten run, and to say they failed to keep their run alive would be an understatement. Alan Shearer (3x), Lars Bohinen (2x), Mike Newell, Graeme Le Saux were the culprits behind one of the biggest wins in EPL’s history that will also go down as Nottingham Forest’s biggest defeat in their history. However, it was not the only one where they lost by seven goals.

9. Middlesbrough 8:1 Manchester City; May 2008

Quite possibly one of the biggest upset wins in the Premier League. While Man City were not nearly as dominant in the EPL as they are now, they suffered a 1:8 defeat against a team that ended up relegated the next year. On that day the goal scorers were Afonso Alves (3x), Stewart Downing (2x), Adam Johnson, Fabio Rochemback and Jeremie Aliadiere.

8. Nottingham Forest 1:8 Manchester United; February 1999

Forest found their way onto our list for the second time, this time involved in the biggest away win in the EPL’s history. Unfortunately for them, Forest once again found themselves on the wrong side of the stick. On their way to the 1998/99 EPL title, Manchester United dismantled Forest (1:8), which contributed to Forest’s ultimate relegation from the Premier League, from which they never managed to recover from. Goal scorers on that night were; Sloskjaer (x4), Yorke (2x), Cole (2x) and for Forest Rogers.

7. Chelsea 8:0 Wigan; May 2010

It was a must-win match for Chelsea, who needed a win to secure their first title since 2006, and suffice to say they took the job of winning very seriously. Wigan had to endure excruciating 90 minutes, where they got completely outclassed by the Blues, who went on to win 8:0 to secure their fourth EPL title. Goal scorers on that night were: Drogba (3x), Anelka (2x), Ashley Cole, Salomon Kalou and Frank Lampard.

6. Southampton 8:0 Sunderland; October 2014

It was a match that will not only go down in history as one of the highest-scoring one but also a match that saw one of the most spectacular own goals produced by Santiago Vergini, who also scored the game-opening goal. However, he was not the only one who scored an own goal on that night, with Birdcutt and Aanholt both scoring a goal in the wrong net. Other than the mentioned three, the goal scorers on that night were Pelle (2x), Cork, Tadic and Wanyama.

5. Newcastle 8:0 Sheffield Wednesday; September 1999

It was Bobby Robson’s debut at St. James’ Park as the head coach, and it proved to be a debut to remember, as the Magpies produced one of the biggest wins in EPL’s history. The man of the match was Alan Shearer who scored five goals, followed by Aaron Hughes, Kieron Dyer and Gary Speed who all contributed one goal. Despite an impressive win, Newcastle United finished season 11th. All goals from this match you can watch here.

4. Manchester City 8:0 Watford; September 2019

The most recent addition to the list of top 10 biggest wins in EPL and the most memorable one happened barely two weeks ago when Manchester City crushed Watford 8:0. The match was clearly one-sided and while everyone expected City to win, no one could have imagined they would do so by such a margin. Pep Guardiola’s men really did not take any prisoners on that day and while they did not need to win by such a margin, it was a much-needed morale boost following a painful 2:3 defeat against Norwich in the previous round of EPL. Goal scorers were Silva (4x), Aguero, Mahrez, Otamendi and De Bruyne.

3. Tottenham 9:1 Wigan; November 2009

Second-highest EPL win in history happened in November 2009, when the Spurs crushed Wigan in what proved to be a very important win, which earned them a fourth-place finish that sent them to Europe for the first time since 1962. Goal scorers on that night were Defoe (x5), Crouch, Lennon, Bentley, Kranjcar and for Wigan Paul Scharner.

2. Manchester United 9:0 Ipswich; March 1995

We are near the end of our list with a match between Manchester United and Ipswich from 1995, which produced a remarkable result. And not only because Man United produced what is even now, 24 years later considered as the highest win in EPL’s history, but also because Ipswich defeated United 3:2 earlier that season, which was one of their seven wins that season, as they finished bottom of the league and found themselves relegated. On the other side, Man United finished second, only trailing Blackburn Rowers, who won with barely one point to spare ahead of Red Devils. Cole scored five times on that night, Hughes twice, Keane and Ince both once.

1. Southampton 0:9 Leicester City; October 2019

We will conclude our list of highest victories in the Premier League with the match between Southampton vs Leicester City from October 2019. After an early goal by Chilwell in the 10th minute and a red card for Bertrand, we all knew that will be hard for the home side to come back, but nobody didn’t expect that will be the biggest away win in Premier League. Perez and Vardy both scored hat-trick while other scorers were Chilwell, Tielemans and Maddison.
