It’s official, Mats Hummels will return to Signal-Iduna Park after three seasons with Bayern Munich who acquired the German defender in the summer of 2016 for a fee of 35 million €. However, this won’t be the first time Hummels will switch from Bayern Munich to Borussia Dortmund.

His football career started with Bayern Munich youth program where he worked his way up the ranks and ultimately got the spot in the senior team only 4 years later. Lacking the experience to play with the senior team, Bayern Munich decided to loan Hummels out in 2008 to Borussia Dortmund, who were impressed by his performances and decided to sign him once the loan ended for a small fee of 4 million €.

That started his 7-year long campaign with Borussia Dortmund between 2009 and 2016. During those years Hummels helped Borussia win 2 league titles, 2 DFB Cups, one German Cup and reached the finals of UEFA Champions League. With his impressive performances, Hummels quickly became known as one of the best defenders in the world, and it did not take long for Bayern Munich to approach him, offering him a contract, which would return Mats Hummels back to his youth club. Hummels decided to make a move back to Bayern in 2016 for a fee of 35 million €. Mats Hummels became a key defender in Bayern and a key player who helped the Bavarians achieve 3 league titles, 3 German Super Cups and 1 German Cup.

In the 2018/19 season, Hummels won his 6th league title, 2nd German Cup and 5th Super Cup, however, failed to play a big role in his team’s success. With only 21 appearances for Bayern Munich in Bundesliga, Hummels was left out of the team in almost half of their matches, clearly showing that Hummels has fallen out of favour. While he might not be among the desired players in Bayern anymore, Hummels was offered a spot in Borussia Dortmund, a team which helped him win two back to back Bundesliga titles in 2011 and 2012.

As it was announced, the transfer deal will be officially confirmed once Hummels completes his medical check at Dortmund, which is set to take place in the upcoming days. As an interesting fact, Hummel’s debut match back with Borussia Dortmund will be against Bayern Munich on August 3rd, when the two sides meet in the DLF Supercup finals. Would Hummels help Borussia Dortmund, it would be a perfect return to the Black and Yellows who will welcome their lost son with open arms in hopes, he can once more help them reach the top of German football once more after 8 long years.
