France ignored the various embezzlements and thrashed Australia in a great show of strength.

France 4-1 Australia

The third fixture of this World Cup had surprising results, with the defeat of Argentina and the draws of Poland and Denmark against Mexico and Tunisia, respectively.

Events raised expectations for France’s debut. The current world champion entered the field with several absences, which considerably threatened the quality of the team commanded by coach Didier Deschamps.

Despite the absences, an adverse result for France would represent the biggest surprise of the day, as the current Australian team is extremely fragile and has few technical resources.

Australia entered with forwards Leckie, Duke and Goodwin, strikers, a completely different trio compared to the World Cup cycle. Atkinson, at right-back, was another novelty in the starting lineup.

Even so, France entered the field with very low lines, and Australia took the opportunity to open the scoring. However, even with a weak performance collectively, Rabiot sought the equalizer in the first half.

Before the break, the French looked for a comeback thanks to the forced entry of Theo Hernandéz in place of Lucas Hernández, another injured player in this World Cup for France. Preliminary information points to another considerable injury.

The first half left negative marks with doubts about the collective functioning. Mbappé dropped the marking on the side and Rabiot covered Griezmann, and moved to the midfielder position.

In the second half, France tactically matched and thrashed Australia in a natural way, thanks to Upamecano’s influence in the distribution of plays. Mbappé and Dembelé moved more through the field and created opportunities on the wings.

Finally, the 4-1 defeat consecrated Olivier Giroud. After failing to score a goal at the 2018 World Cup, the former Arsenal player scored two goals against Australia and equalled Thierry Henry in the historic artillery of the French national team.

France will need to improve collectively in order not to suffer from considerable fluctuations in 90 minutes in the next match, but the debut with a safe victory and thrashing against Australia represents excellent news for the current world champions.

Individual talent continues to have decisive power in favour of France, due to the excellent quality of the squad as a whole, in addition to the coach’s ability to see situations during match, something that coach Lionel Scaloni lacked in Argentina’s defeat against Saudi Arabia.

The comeback with a show of strength and great players, despite the absences, confirms France as a candidate for the World Cup title.

Finally, it is worth highlighting how Kylian Mbappé is in excellent physical shape, negative news for France’s main opponents.
