Tottenham linked with shock move for Leonardo Bonucci

Juventus defender Leonardo Bonucci has been linked with a shock move to Tottenham.

Leonardo Bonucci

The Italy international, 35, has received criticism following some shaky performances at the back this season as Juventus’ struggles seem to no end under Max Allegri. Juventus have only won four out of their first ten matches in Serie A and currently lie eighth in the table, six points behind fourth-placed AS Roma.

Amidst Bianconeri’s poor start to the season, it is understood that Leonardo Bonucci has fallen out with Max Allegri after the manager decided to bench the defender against Torino. While Bonucci came on in the second half in Juventus’ 1-0 win over Torino, the decision to leave him out of the starting XI didn’t go down well with the player.

Bonucci’s relationship with Allegri has seemingly turned sour in recent weeks, with the veteran defender now wanting a way out of the Allianz Stadium as early as January. Tottenham has been identified as a potential destination for the Italian, and a move would reunite him with his old boss Antonio Conte, and former teammates Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur.

Tottenham could do with a serial winner like Leonardo Bonucci

Tottenham have made steady progress under Antonio Conte and firmly remain in the title race. Conte is building a strong team in north London that can challenge for titles and trophies in the next couple of years, and Spurs’ development in the last six to eight months has seen Daniel Levy loosen his purse strings to back the Italian tactician in the transfer windows.

In Rodrigo Bentancur, Ivan Perisic, Clement Lenglet, Richarlison and Yves Bissouma among others, Conte has signed experienced and versatile players that fit his system like a glove. His team is far from complete yet, but the building blocks are there to be seen for all.

Going by the impact most of his signings have made for the north London club, Conte deserves to be backed in January too. And if he asks the Spurs board to sign Leonardo Bonucci, then they must do it.

After all, Conte knows Bonucci in and out having enjoyed great success together at Juventus. He also managed the defender in the Italy national team and knows what exactly the player could bring to Spurs if they sign him. Bonucci may have been past his prime with his performance levels dipping in the last few years, but his winning mentality and volumes of experience playing at the highest level is something that could rub off on everyone around Tottenham.

The Juventus skipper could come in at Spurs as a stop-gap solution until a young, talented and hungry centre-back becomes available. Thus, it won’t be a bad idea for Spurs to bring Bonucci in during the winter transfer window to boost their squad for the rest of the campaign.
