Newcastle United set to launch swoop for Brighton goalkeeper Robert Sanchez

Newcastle United are plotting a raid for Brighton goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, as Eddie Howe eyes a new goalkeeper next season.

Robert Sanchez (Brighton and Hove Albion)

A youth product of the Brighton academy, Robert Sanchez, 24, has emerged as one of Premier League’s best young goalkeepers in the last 12-15 months, impressing with his distribution skills, leadership and shot-stopping ability. His solid performances for Brighton has earned him international recognition with Spain, debuting last year in a World Cup qualifier against Georgia.

The Spaniard has kept eight clean sheets in the league this season and has been overall solid for Graham Potter’s side, catching the attention of Newcastle United as a result. Eddie Howe is on the hunt for a new goalkeeper and it is understood that Sanchez is the Magpies’ favoured choice. Having scouted him extensively, the club are lining up a £20million offer in the summer.

Newcastle and Brighton have already done business for defender Dan Burn during the January transfer window, which is positive news for any potential deal for Sanchez.

Eddie Howe wants an upgrade on Martin Dubravka

Newcastle United have recovered well in the last two months after a poor start to the campaign under former manager Steve Bruce. All thanks to Eddie Howe, they are currently 15th in the table, nine points above the relegation zone. And while the Magpies have slumped to three straight league defeats, Howe and co. look likely to stay in the top flight.

It shows the potential Howe has in his squad but he will have to offload a few underperforming players in the upcoming transfer window. The English tactician’s topmost priority seems to be adding a new goalkeeper. While he does have two in the shape of Martin Dubravka and Karl Darlow, neither of them have really shone over the season.

This is perhaps why Howe wants to add a new goalkeeper to his ranks.

Signing Robert Sanchez could be a fine piece of business for Newcastle

Brighton shot-stopper Robert Sanchez is believed to be at the top of Newcastle United’s wishlist. He has been brilliant for Brighton ever since returning from a loan spell with Rochdale in the summer of 2020. Graham Potter has played a vital role behind the one-cap Spanish international’s rise in the Premier League, thus, he would loath to lose him if Newcastle United come up with an attractive offer.

Sanchez has showcased superb reflexes and shot-stopping skills for the Seagulls in the last two seasons, along with calmness under pressure and the ability to play out from the back. Such attributes have certainly caught the attention of Howe’s scouts, and given he is just 24, he has a long way to go in his career.

Competition for places is important and signing a talented Spanish goalkeeper in Sanchez would be a step in the right direction for Newcastle United.
